Jim Cox Report: July 2025

Dear Publisher Folk, Friends & Family:

Even free reviews aren't really free. To the author and/or publisher there is the cost of producing a book, of creating and implementing a publicity campaign or a marketing program it, postage, and time.

That is why I always suggest to authors, publishers, and publicist that ten working days (skipping weekends and holidays) after you put a book into the mails to me (or anyone else) for review that you send me (or them) an email follow-up.

In the "Subject" line put "Status Request"

In the Message box put:

Title
Author
Publisher
ISBN

Then the following 3 questions:

1. Did the book arrive safely
2. What is its status with respect to getting reviewed
3. Is there any further information or assistance you can provide

The above is what I always recommended authors, publishers, and publicist do when sending a review copy to any reviewer or review resource (including the Midwest Book Review).

No legitimate reviewer will fail to respond. Note that you are not pitching the book (that's the job of your original cover letter and/or publicity release that accompanied the review copy of your book) whether it was in the form of an Advanced Reading Copy (ARC), a published copy (Hardcover or Paperback), an Ebook or a PDF file.

In lieu of (or in addition to!) postage stamp donations, we also accept PayPal gifts of support to our postage stamp fund for what we try to accomplish in behalf of the small press community.

Simply log onto your PayPal account and direct your kindness (in any amount and at your discretion) to the Midwest Book Review at: SupportMBR [at] aol.com (The @ is replaced by "[at]" in the above email address, in an attempt to avoid email-harvesting spambots.)

If you have postage stamps to donate, or if you have a book you'd like considered for review, then send those postage stamps (always appreciated, never required), or a published copy of that book (no galleys, uncorrected proofs, or Advance Reading Copies), accompanied by a cover letter and some form of publicity release to my attention at the address below.

All of the previous issues of the "Jim Cox Report" are archived on the Midwest Book Review website at www.midwestbookreview.com/bookbiz/jimcox.htm. If you'd like to receive the "Jim Cox Report" directly (and for free), just send me an email asking to be signed up for it.

So until next time -- goodbye, good luck, and good reading!
