New Fangled Piecing: Faster & Easier

PO Box 3290, Paducah, KY 42002-3290
www.americanquilter.com
9781604601084, $24.95, www.amazon.com

A quilt is a type of blanket, traditionally composed of 3 layers of fiber: a woven cloth top, a layer of batting or wadding and a woven back, combined using the technique of quilting. A quilt is distinguishable from other types of blankets because it is pieced together with several pieces of cloth. "Quilting" refers to the technique of joining at least two fabric layers by stitches or ties. In most cases, two fabric layers surround a middle layer of batting (cotton, polyester, silk, wool or combinations of fibers) which is a lighter, insulating layer. The most decorative fabric surface is called the "top", and is the design focus. A single piece of fabric (a "wholecloth quilt") may be used as the top, or the top may be "pieced" from smaller fabric pieces. Sewing together smaller pieces of fabric into a larger patchwork "block" of fabric creates the basic unit. "New Fangled Piecing: Faster & Easier" is a 96 page instructional compendium provides four simple strategies to speed up the piecing process in a whole new way and cut down on how long it takes to sew the quilt top so you can have more time to either quilt the top or piece another one. Needlecrafters can utilize 13 different construction techniques to make replacement units to speed the sewing along and make any or all of the eleven fun quilt projects showcased in "New Fangled Piecing: Faster & Easier" -- or simply take these new tools and find their own piecing bliss. Informed, informative, and thoroughly 'user friendly' from beginning to end, "New Fangled Piecing: Faster & Easier" is very highly recommended for personal and community library Needlecraft reference collections.

Anthony B. Pinn

Writing God's Obituary: How a Good Methodist Became a Better Atheist is written by a man who preached his first sermon at age twelve, became one of the youngest ordained ministers in his denomination at age eighteen, and quickly received a PhD in religion from Harvard University -- all the while struggling with his own growing skepticism. His church was unable to address his questions, he viewed it as being ineffectual in meeting the community at large's needs, and in his mid-twenties he decided to leave the ministry and study humanism, becoming as fervent a non-believer as he had been a believer. Writing God's Obituary outlines his search for meaning and considers the basics problems of God and religion: it's a strong pick for any theology or spirituality collection, providing personal and religious perspectives from an unusual viewpoint.

The Every Other Day Diet: The Diet That Lets You Eat All You Want (Half the Time) and Keep the Weight Off isn't just a concept, it's a proven, successful program: one dieter lost 41 pounds on this diet, and kept it off. This isn't just a layman's creation, either: it comes from Dr. Krista Varady, an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois who developed this strategy after conducting scientific studies on hundreds of people in search of a unified diet approach that would work for the largest number. Diet Days are alternated with Feast Days so the dieter feels no loss of food enjoyment or cravings that are never satisfied. It's a very simple concept that requires no measuring, no big changes: quite simply, on Diet Day, you limit calories and on Feast Day, you eat anything you want and as much as you want. It's proven to work and it IS that simple. Some 80 recipes round out the fine presentation.

John Fulton Folinsbee (March 14, 1892 - May 10, 1972) was an American landscape painter and member of the art colony at New Hope, Pennsylvania. He is best known today for his impressionist scenes of New Hope and Lambertville, New Jersey, particularly the factories, quarries, and canals along the Delaware River. Early in his career, Folinsbee painted in a tonalist style, with an interest in light and atmosphere that grew directly from his time with Harrison and Carlson in Woodstock. By the late nineteen-teens, he had moved away from tonalism into a more structured, impressionist style. In the mid-1920s, Folinsbee began studying the work of Cezanne, which led to a trip to France in the summer of 1926. The paintings that resulted from this trip, and those that followed later in the decade, reflect a deep understanding of Cezanne's compositional strategies and a desire to reveal the underlying structure of forms. Folinsbee's exploration of structure led eventually to an analytical, highly individual expressionist style in which he painted for the remainder of his career. His palette darkened, his brushstrokes loosened further, and his sense of light and atmosphere became more dramatic. These later works are concerned with conveying a sense of mood and an intense emotional response to the world around him. Folinsbee always had a sketchbook or a box of 8 x 10 inch canvasboards with him, ready to capture any scene that caught his eye. Although he painted "en plein air", directly from nature, Folinsbee would later transform his small-scale sketches into larger paintings in his studio, and frequently made a number of copies of the same scene on different sizes of canvas. "Folinsbee Considered" by Kirsten M. Jensen (Director of the John F. Folinsbee Catalogue Raisonne) is a magnificently produced in full color, 332 page compendium showcasing the life's work of a truly gifted American artist. Informed and informative, and in addition to a section of superbly reproduced full page plates of the artist's work, "Folinsbee Considered" is enhanced with the inclusion of a catalogue of selected landscape and genre paintings, a chronology, and exhibition history (1912-2012), a bibliography of the literature regarding Folinsbee, and a comprehensive index. "Folinsbee Considered" will prove to be an enduringly popular and invaluable addition to academic library American Art History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

A pathogen in the oldest and broadest sense is anything that can produce disease. Typically the term is used to mean an infectious agent (colloquially known as a germ) - a microorganism, in the widest sense such as a virus, bacterium, prion, fungus or protozoan, that causes disease in its host. The host may be an animal, a plant, a fungi or even another microorganism. The pathogenesis of a disease is the mechanism that causes the disease. The term can also describe the origin and development of the disease, and whether it is acute, chronic, or recurrent. The word comes from the Greek pathos ("disease") and genesis ("creation"). Types of pathogenesis include microbial infection, inflammation, malignancy and tissue breakdown. For example bacterial pathogenesis is the mechanism by which bacteria cause infectious illness. The collaborative compiled and co-edited by Pascale Cossart (Pasteur Institute) and Stanley Maloy (San Diego State University), "Bacterial Pathogenesis" is a 413 page compendium comprised of twenty-three research papers by experts in the field of bacterial pathogenesis and deftly organized into three major sections: Model Systems; General Concepts and Mechanisms; Therapeutics. PO Box 39910, Los Angeles, CA 90039

Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Common traits include fast tempos, shrieked vocals, highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, blast beat drumming, raw (lo-fi) recording and unconventional song structures. During the 1980s, several thrash metal and death metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This so-called "first wave" included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. A "second wave" arose in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor. The early Norwegian black metal scene developed the style of their forebears into a distinct genre. Norwegian-inspired black metal scenes emerged throughout Europe and North America, although some other scenes developed their own styles with no connection to the Norwegian one. Initially a synonym for "Satanic metal", black metal is often met with hostility from mainstream culture. Many artists express extreme anti-Christian and misanthropic views, and several of the genre's "second wave" pioneers have been convicted for church burnings and murder. There is also a small neo-Nazi movement within black metal, although most fans and prominent artists shun Nazism and oppose its influence on black metal. "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult" by Dayal Patterson is a 600 page compendium that provides an impressively detailed and exhaustive history of this movement in pop culture music by drawing upon an impressive number of interviews with the bands and performers most associated with it. Profusely illustrated throughout, "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult" is very strongly recommended as an important and seminal contribution to personal, community, academic library 20th Century Music History reference collections in general, and Heavy Metal/Black Metal Studies supplemental reading lists in particular. It should be noted that "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult" is also available in a Kindle edition ($15.49).

An unidentified flying object, or UFO, in its most general definition, is any apparent anomaly in the sky that is not identifiable as a known object or phenomenon. Such anomalies may later be identified, but depending on the evidence or lack of evidence, such an identification may not be possible generally leaving the anomaly unexplained. While stories of unexplained apparitions have been told since antiquity, the term "UFO" (or "UFOB") was officially created in 1953 by the United States Air Force (USAF) to serve as a catch-all for all such reports. It was stated that a "UFOB" was "any airborne object which by performance, aerodynamic characteristics, or unusual features, does not conform to any presently known aircraft or missile type, or which cannot be positively identified as a familiar object." As originally defined, the term was restricted to those fraction of cases which remained unidentified after investigation, with USAF interest being for potential national security reasons and/or "technical aspects." During the late 1940s and through the 1950s, UFOs were often referred to popularly as "flying saucers" or "flying discs". The term UFO became more widespread during the 1950s, at first in technical literature, but later in popular use. UFOs garnered considerable interest during the Cold War, an era associated with a heightened concern for national security. "The Government UFO Files: The Conspiracy of Cover-Up" by Kevin D. Randle is a 368 page compendium that provides interested readers with a detailed and documented and analytical history of the UFO drawn from numerous governmental and military sources including the FBI, CIA, FAA, NASA, and the U.S. Army. A seminal work of extraordinary value, "The Government UFO Files: The Conspiracy of Cover-Up" is a very highly recommended addition for personal, community, and academic library UFO Studies reference collections and supplemental studies reading lists.

Plenty of Time When We Get Home: Love and Recovery in the Aftermath of War tells of author Sergeant Kayla Williams, an Arabic linguist deployed to Iraq whose life is changed by an injured fellow soldier who is predicted to never regain total functional independence again. Despite the grim prognosis a relationship blossomed between the two and overcame all obstacles - including struggling with a military medical snafu which ordered McGough back to base without rehabilitation or addressing the severe mental and physical challenges he faced. As Williams faced her own challenges returning to civilian life as a female veteran, the two found strength to face severe challenges to their happiness and life, eventually moving forward together. Plenty of Time When We Get Home is a powerful testimony to the power of love and the failings of the military to address veteran issues. It should be in every military collection.

Franz Joseph Haydn (31 March 1732 - 31 May 1809), was an Austrian composer and one of the most prolific and prominent of the Classical period. He is often called the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet" because of his important contributions to these forms. He was also instrumental in the development of the piano trio and in the evolution of sonata form. A lifelong resident of Austria, Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterhazy family on their remote estate. Isolated from other composers and trends in music until the later part of his long life, he was, as he put it, "forced to become original". At the time of his death, he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe. "Playing Before the Lord: The Life and Work of Joseph Haydn" by Calvin R. Stapert (Professor Emeritus of Music, Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan) is a 304 page historical overview and study of the personal life and professional achievements of one of the great European musicians. A work of meticulous scholarship, yet highly accessible to the non-specialist general reader, "Playing Before the Lord: The Life and Work of Joseph Haydn" is strongly recommended for personal, community, and academic library Music History and Biography reference collections.

William Moultrie (November 23, 1730 - September 27, 1805) was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He fought in the Anglo-Cherokee War (1761) and served in the colonial assembly before the advent of the American Revolution. In 1775 he was commissioned colonel of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment. In December of that year he led a raid on an encampment of runaway slaves on Sullivan's Island, killing 50 and capturing the rest. In 1776 his defense of a small fort on Sullivan's Island (later named Fort Moultrie in his honor) prevented Sir Henry Clinton and Sir Peter Parker from taking Charleston, South Carolina. The Continental Congress passed a resolution thanking Moultrie. He was promoted to brigadier general and his regiment was taken into the Continental Army. Moultrie's skill failed to prevent the fall of Savannah, Georgia to the British in 1778. He was captured in the fall of Charleston to the British in 1780 and later exchanged. He was promoted to major general in 1782, the last man appointed to that rank by Congress. After the war he served as the 35th Governor of South Carolina (1785 - 87, 1792 - 94). He wrote Memoirs of the Revolution as far as it Related to the States of North and South Carolina (1802). "Crescent Moon over Carolina: William Moultrie and American Liberty" by historian and biographer C. L. Bragg is a 336 page biography that serves to rescue an Moultrie from obscurity and provide a fitting and accurate descriptive assessment of his value to the American Revolution in general, and the fledgling state of South Carolina in particular. Author and survival expert James Ballou lays out five basic questions that must be addressed in selecting a weapon; how the enterprising survivalist can extract reliable service from older and less expensive firearms; what gear and tools are required to service and repair weapons at home; the types of ammunition to consider when easily accessible sources expire; the role of multicaliber guns, backup guns, and alternative weapons in survival planning. Of special note is the instructive commentary on practical modifications that can be made on guns to make them workable in a post-apocalypse scenario. Profusely illustrated throughout with black-and-white photography, informed and informative, and appropriate for experienced gun owners and non-specialist general readers alike, "Arming for the Apocalypse: Assembling Your Survival Arsenal.....While You Still Can" is critically important and highly recommended.

New York, NY 10038
9781561638352 $13.99 www.nbmpublishing.com

All Star is an original, black-and-white graphic novel about a young athlete's coming of age. The year is 1998, a scandal about President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky is beginning to unravel, and Carl Carter is on the verge of leading his high school baseball team to the state championship. A full scholarship to the University of Maine is on the line; perhaps he even has a chance at professional baseball. Carl is from a respectable middle class background, but the working class family of his best friend, Esden, is barely scraping by. As the end of the school year and the baseball season approach, Carl and Esden engage in a drunken bout of vandalism and petty theft - but star athlete Carl receives a much lighter punishment than Esden, who has a more troubled history. Carl's conscience burns at the injustice. The consequences of that fateful night fracture Carl's and Esden's friendship, and may deny Esden any hope of a bright future. Is there anything Carl can do? Thoughtful, provocative, and populated by believable human characters, All Star is highly recommended. All Star does contain some cursing and a few sexual allusions, though it is never explicit, and is therefore more suitable for teens and adults (or any reader who is mature enough to understand what the Lewinsky scandal was all about).

They often encountered racism, and lived a life of de facto segregation, surviving on razor-thin wages. Saul's long work hours cut into the time he spent at school, yet he dedicated himself to succeeding academically. He went to college with his family's blessing, graduated in 1967, and became a teacher. Rows of Memory is an unforgettable glimpse into daily life among Latinos who labored to bring cheap food to all of America, and the steep demands of modern industrial agriculture. Highly recommended.

Wilderness and Waterpower: How Banff National Park Became a Hydroelectric Storage Reservoir is a thoughtful, in-depth history of why and how Banff National Park (Canada's oldest national park, situated in the Rocky Mountains) became substantially altered to serve as hydroelectric storage, and the legacy of this transformation up to the modern day. Conservationists, energy researchers, environmentalists and more will find this story of benefits, burdens, and externalities informative and thorough. The political dimensions of regulating electricity production in the national park are also strewn with invaluable lessons, as Wilderness and Waterpower covers the influence that Max Aitkin (later Lord Beaverbook), R.B. Bennett (a legal advisor destined to become prime minister), and many local politicians and bureaucrats had on the ongoing project. "With the growth in electricity demand being satisfied by other energy sources within the province, and with the capitalist imperative thus relaxed, what kept these elaborate engineering works on the Bow River in existence? They required costly maintenance. Why not tear them down, let the river revert to its wild state? Some people argued for such an outcome. But surprisingly, long after these hydroelectric works had outlived their functional usefulness, an unusual coalition of interests formed to keep the dams in place." Extensive notes and an index round out this welcome condition to public and college library collections.

New World Library
14 Pamaron Way

9781608681822 $24.95 www.newworldlibrary.com

Goddesses: Mysteries of the Feminine Divine collects over twenty lectures delivered between 1972 and 1986 by author, teacher, and mythologist Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), known for his scholarly works "The Power of Myth" and "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". Material in Goddesses focuses especially upon the symbols and themes of the female divine, and their transformations as observed throughout history. Furthermore, Goddesses has never before been heard, read, or experienced except by those who attended the original lectures. Black-and-white illustrations and an extensive index enhance this scholarly, thoughtful, and analytical examination of goddess mythology and its modern-day legacy. "The principal deities of the patriarchal traditions were male deities. The most extreme example of this masculine accent is in our own Old Testament, where there are no goddesses. In the biblical tradition, the old goddesses were simply eliminated, whereas what the Greeks did, as we've already seen, was to marry the god to the Goddess, or to make the god the protector of the Goddess, or to make the Goddess the protector of the god. They established a relationship that tied themselves and their own deities to the land and the local cult in an interactive way."
