9781506488745, $17.99, HC, 32pp

https://www.amazon.com/Mara-Hears-Style-Terri-Clemmons/dp/1506488749

Synopsis: Mara's first day at her new school is filled with ups and downs surrounding her hearing aids: her teacher doesn't remember to turn on her microphone, the lunchroom is too chaotic for lip-reading, and she keeps reading the same question over and over on her classmates' lips: "What's in her ears?" After a morning spent navigating these challenges, Mara makes a connection on the playground and finds that her hearing aid superpowers are perfect for making new friends.

Critique: Accessible, engaging, entertaining and informative "Mara Hears in Style" by the team of author/storyteller Terri Clemmons and artist/illustrator Lucy Rogers will encourage readers ages 4-8 to respect hearing differences and inspire kids who worry about making new friends. This very special picture book is filled with American Sign Language depictions -- including a full alphabet spread--so readers can learn to sign alongside Mara as they discover new ways to bridge communication gaps in their own local communities and schools. While "Mara Hears in Style" is unreservedly recommended for family, elementary school, and community library picture book collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that it is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $16.99)

9781773068855, $18.99, HC, 200pp

https://www.amazon.com/One-More-Mountain-Breadwinner-5/dp/1773068857

Synopsis: In Kabul, Afghanistan, 15-year-old Damsa runs away to avoid being forced into marriage by her family. She is found by a police officer named Shauzia, who takes her to Green Valley, a shelter and school for women and girls run by Parvana.

It has been 20 years since Parvana and Shauzia had to disguise themselves as boys to support themselves and their families. But when the Taliban were defeated in 2001, it looked as if Afghans could finally rebuild their country. Many things have changed for Parvana since then. She has married Asif, who she met in the desert as she searched for her family when she was a child. She runs a school for girls. She has a son, Rafi, who is about to fly to New York, where he will train to become a dancer.

But Shauzia is still Parvana's best friend. And Parvana is still headstrong, bringing her in conflict with her spoiled sister Maryam.

While Asif tries to get Maryam and Rafi on one of the last flights out of Kabul, the Taliban come to the school, and Parvana must lead the girls out of Green Valley and into the mountains.

Critique: Exceptionally well written and of particular interest to young readers ages 10-14 who are aware of the oppression of girls and women under the fundamentalist Islamic rule of the Taliban in the nation of Afghanistan, "One More Mountain" (the fifth book in the Breadwinner series by Deborah Ellis) is a thoroughly appropriate and unreservedly recommended addition to middle school and community library collections. While also readily available for personal reading lists in a digital book format (Kindle, $9.99), it should be noted that all royalties will be donated to the Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan organization (https://www.facebook.com/cw4wafghan).

Synopsis: The Earth's oceans are on the rise. Since 1900, global sea levels have risen steadily each year to a global average of about 8 inches (20cm) today, and they're still rising. By 2100, the sea could climb as much as 14 feet (4.3m) to 32 feet (9.75m).

"Rising Seas: Flooding, Climate Change and Our New World" by Keltie Thomas provides young readers ages 9-13 with an eye-popping view of what the Earth might look like under the rising and falling water levels of climate change. Photographs juxtapose the present-day with that same area's projected future. The shocking images will help them understand the urgency for action.

Synopsis: "Birds of Our Land" by Virginia W. Dike is a child's guide to West African birds with the aim of introducing children to some of the many fascinating birds that they may not be familiar with. It explains the basic features of birds and key things to note in observing them and is accompanied by beautiful paintings by illustrator Robin Gowen of 25 birds representing the major species in the region.

Through its rich, poetic descriptions, "Birds of Our Land" offers children ages 7-12 a gateway to the natural world by introducing them to the basics of bird watching. "Birds of Our Land" also includes activities relating to birds and a guide for teachers and parents. More than a fun and interesting read, "Birds of Our Land" is the perfect tool for parents and educators encouraging children to spend more time outdoors exploring the world of nature and giving them an appreciation of the beauty and interdependence of all forms of life.

Critique: Profusely illustrated throughout with museum quality artwork, "Birds of West Africa: A Child's Guide" is as informative as it is fun. Simply stated, "Birds of West Africa: A Child's Guide" is especially and unreservedly recommended for family, elementary school, and community library Avian Wildlife collections for young readers.

Editorial Note #2: Robin Gowen (https://www.sullivangoss.com/artists/robin-gowen) is continually adventuring out into nature, and never fails to offer up something new and different in the genre of landscape painting. She sharpens her gaze to record the intricate branches of a wintery sycamore, crisp and sharp as after a cleansing rainstorm, only to back away from the scene and reduce hillside sunlight to flat planes of candy pink that drip down into chocolatey canyons. You never know what is going to emerge from the hand of this multifaceted painter. Her main focus is the land as it changes with the light, in every season, with every shift of the weather.

Smash the Patriarchy: A Graphic Novel
Marta Breen and Jenny Jordahl, authors
Sian Mackie, translator
Helvetiq
9783039640188 $19.99

https://www.amazon.com/Smash-Patriarchy-Graphic-Marta-Breen/dp/3039640186

Synopsis: Patriarchy means "the rule of the father" and describes a system where men are in control. At least since the time of Aristotle, loud-mouthed men have called women weak and inferior. In entertaining comic book form, Smash the Patriarchy shames the culprits and salutes more than 100 inspiring women - from Pharaoh Hatshepsut to Mary Wollstonecraft to Petra Herrera - who stood up to them.

The book is not afraid to examine some of the worst crimes - public shaming, medical examinations, and the widespread murder and jailing of feminists around the world - as it calls on readers to finally smash the patriarchy forever.

These men get embarrassed: Aristotle, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, Woody Allen and many more...

These women are celebrated: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Emily Dickinson, Queen Christina of Sweden, Arundhati Roy, Amanda Gorman, and many more...

Critique: Smash the Patriarchy: A Graphic Novel is a full-color graphic novel about feminism throughout history, and why feminism is needed - because patriarchal culture has repressed women's rights for centuries! Historical quotes of famous men from dozens of nations and eras reveal how patriarchal culture oppressively forbid women to get an education, purse all but a few careers, or have any say over who they marry or how they are treated. Yet there were women who bravely resisted, sometimes at the cost of their lives (such as the feminists condemned to the guillotine in the wake of the French Revolution). Smash the Patriarchy celebrates the accomplishments and legacy of notable woman, while criticizing the male-dominated view of patriarchal men. Although there are a few images of nudity and genitalia when discussing male and female bodies, there is no sexual content; Smash the Patriarchy is an educational book for all ages. It should also be noted that Smash the Patriarchy is emphatically not an anti-trans or trans-exclusionary book; transgender women are mentioned briefly. Highly recommended, especially for public and school library collections.

Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir

9780593462294 $14.99 pbk / $9.99 Kindle

https://www.amazon.com/Mexikid-Pedro-Mart%C3%ADn/dp/0593462297

Synopsis: An unforgettable graphic memoir about a Mexican American boy's family and their adventure-filled road trip to bring their abuelito back from Mexico to live with them that National Book Award Finalist Victoria Jamieson calls "one of those books that kids will pass to their friends as soon as they have finished it."

Pedro Martin has grown up hearing stories about his abuelito - his legendary crime-fighting, grandfather who was once a part of the Mexican Revolution! But that doesn't mean Pedro is excited at the news that Abuelito is coming to live with their family. After all, Pedro has 8 brothers and sisters and the house is crowded enough! Still, Pedro piles into the Winnebago with his family for a road trip to Mexico to bring Abuelito home, and what follows is the trip of a lifetime, one filled with laughs and heartache. Along the way, Pedro finally connects with his abuelito and learns what it means to grow up and find his grito.

Critique: Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir is a graphic novel of true-life stories from Mexican-American author Pedro Martin's childhood. He grew up as one of nine children on farm, and when he was a child, his family traveled in a Winnebago (the older kids drove separately) to Mexico, to help out his Abuelito (grandfather) and bring him home to live with the family in America. As a young boy, Pedro was a budding artist fascinated by American pop culture such as Star Wars. During the trip, he learns a lot - how his Abuelito survived bandits and the Mexican Revolution, the hardships his father endured growing up (including the loss of multiple siblings and leaving home as a teenager in a desperate attempt to keep the family from starving to death), why people born in America should never consume raw milk or water from Mexico, and much more! Mexikid is an English-language graphic novel; although Spanish phrases occasionally appear, all but the shortest or most self-explanatory phrases have English translation footnotes. Although Mexikid is especially intended for young people, readers of all ages will thoroughly enjoy this story of growing up and navigating life's challenges. Mexikid is highly recommended, especially for school and public library collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists that Mexikid is also available in a Kindle edition ($9.99).

Synopsis: Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster has never quite fit into her life. She's skipped multiple grades and doesn't really connect with the older kids at school, but she's not comfortable with her family, either. The reason? Sophie's a Telepath, someone who can read minds. No one knows her secret -- at least, that's what she thinks...

But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she's not alone. He's a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well... she isn't. Fitz opens Sophie's eyes to a shocking truth, and she is forced to leave behind her family for a new life in a place that is vastly different from what she has ever known.

Critique: "Keeper of the Lost Cities" is stunning graphic novel adaptation with all the adventure and epic worldbuilding the Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger is known for. Jordan and Jasmine's dad loves history and is always telling them stories about the past. Synopsis: A heartwarming celebration of Ramadan, food, and community.

Ramadan is coming, and as Abba and Ammi prepare for their month-long fast, Aliya hugs a secret to her chest: she's going to fast too! Ammi says she's still too young to fast, but Aliya is determined. At school, she refuses her snack, her lunch - even the cupcakes Sanjay's mom drops off for his birthday. But when she gets home, she can't resist Ammi's sweet, syrupy baklava. Before Aliya can stop herself, she reaches out and takes a big bite.

Aliya is disappointed in herself, but Ammi explains that there are many other ways to celebrate Ramadan besides fasting, like performing acts of kindness! Together, Aliya and her parents spend the month preparing and delivering meals to people in need.

This joyful look at Ramadan is based on the author's own childhood experiences and is rich with facts and details about the holiday. Readers familiar and unfamiliar with the holiest month in the Islamic calendar will get swept up in the festivities, and perhaps be inspired to share a meal with their community.

Critique: Based on author Farida Zaman's own childhood experiences, Aliya's Secret: A Story of Ramadan is a picturebook story set during Ramadan, a month when observers of Islam are expected to fast during the day. Aliya is a young girl who, although exempt from fasting due to her age, tries her best to uphold the fast. When Aliya slips up, she feels saddened, but her family teaches her that there are many ways to celebrate Ramadan other than fasting, and together they help people in need by delivering food. Aliya's Secret is a heartwarming story with a positive message about the importance of compassion, and highly recommended especially for school and public library picturebook collections.

Adjusting to life with type 1 diabetes isn't easy. Emily is desperate to prove that she's just as strong and capable as ever, so she jumps at the opportunity to go on a backcountry ski trip with her dad and her new diabetic alert dog, Molly.

But when an avalanche rips through the area, separating Emily from her father, she and Molly are left to face a challenge far greater than anything she could have imagined. When it becomes clear that no one will come to their rescue before their food and insulin run out, Emily and Molly must find strength they didn't know they possessed (and faith in one another) to survive the harsh wintery conditions and escape the backcountry.

Fazed Angle Media
9798988190257, $15.99 Paper, $5.99 ebook

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNHJJQ23

Werecats Resurgent, the third book in the Werecats series about were-lynx Pawly, provides another riveting fantasy thriller that expands the themes of family struggle and reconciliation. Taking center stage is Mawro, who appeared in the previous books with his own agenda for bloodletting.

He learns how the twins' Afflication manifested, and what forces are actually major influencers and creators of the werecats and their lethal abilities. Intent on tapping Pawly's abilities on behalf of his rogue state employer, Mawro continues to present the were-family with dangerous confrontations and challenges. Lenny, too, contributes his motives and wisdom to the fray as three military forces find the family's abilities key to their missions.

Mark J. Engels set the stage for these confrontations in the previous books, which means that Werecats Resurgent would best be enjoyed by prior fans of Pawly's adventures. This will provide a seamless move into the milieu of this final story, where the objectives, power plays, and family strife prove even more compelling for their connections to complex international dilemmas. The ancient clan of were-cats experiences attacks and possible dissolution as their secrets, identities, and origins are exposed piece by piece, with a host of special interests attempting to dictate not just their survival, but their deployment.

More so than its predecessors, Werecats Resurgent cultivates a quasi-military atmosphere as the story moves through subterfuge, detection, DPRK's technology deployment, and more forces of battle and confrontation. The clashes are vividly portrayed, Pawly's family's uncertain position in the eye of the international storm becomes even more engrossing in this story, and the blend of fantasy with paranormal thriller elements (and even romance) provides a satisfying, compelling mix that can easily cross genres to attract readers who will find the multifaceted saga thoroughly engrossing.

Replete with elements of political and military might, yet tempered by the well-developed personalities and connections between were-cats and humans, Werecats Resurgent proves as delightful a read as its predecessors, further expanding the family's dilemma and Pawly's emergent mission to be a leader of not just her clan, but a wider group.

Libraries and readers seeking exceptional action and a story that neatly expands the werecat themes of its predecessors will find Werecats Resurgent gripping.

The second book in The Arcanium children's fantasy series, Mirror of Wolves, returns to Ty Baxter's world, where he has become focused on developing his magical abilities after being stranded in Arcania. He has learned a lot about this new world in the weeks since the first book ended, absorbing its wonder and promise while also developing a new fixation on justice after learning that his mother's death long ago was no accident, but murder.

The big question remains, however: is he the one prophesized to end a dark sorcerer's rule? A magical object would seem to hold the answer to this key question, but Ty must locate it, first, facing new challenges in a quest that involves him and his companions in a series of dangerous adventures.

Kids in middle school and older who look for action-packed fantasy adventures that center on a quest and discoveries of self and purpose will find Mirror of Wolves stands nicely alone, as well as proving a powerful continuation of the themes and relationships introduced in River of Crows. The seamless intersection of this world's special interests and challenges provide alluring elements of fantasy, from dragons to magic, alongside psychological growth opportunities. These test the characters and present the perspectives of not only forces that appear to be on the side of good, but those who hold malicious intent.

Action-packed descriptions and passages lend to a story vivid in its imagination, well-developed in its characters, and filled with quest-oriented goals that present satisfyingly complex twists and turns of plot. Like its predecessor, Mirror of Wolves creates the opportunity for both entertainment and thought-provoking insights about the nature of power, courage, and wielding force for the sake of something more than individual ambition.

Libraries and readers looking for vivid adventure fantasies that attract through powerful characters that clash and create new possibilities through their actions and growth will find Mirror of Wolves a delight.

Clarity of Sight
Dani Resh
Warren Publishing
www.warrenpublishing.net
9781960146601, $30.95 Hardcover, $18.95 Paper, $4.99 ebook

https://www.amazon.com/Clarity-Sight-Magic-Shoe-Dani/dp/1960146599

Clarity of Sight, the second book in the Magic Shoe series, opens with a succinct roundup of setting and atmosphere that pulls young adults into the story from its opening descriptive paragraph: "The days seemed endless in Underfoot with no communication from the outside world. No mail, no cell phones, absolutely no word from up top. I got why the Vins had shut themselves off since the Wrathful and their unbreakable magic had proven to be a very real threat, but this was infuriating. As a Cerebral, I was used to looking for signs, but I had nothing to work with. Nothing at all."

Maria's powers, as well as her fears, have only grown in Underfoot. Missing her parents and struggling with everything that has impacted her since that fateful night when everything fell apart, Maria seems to be in no shape to confront more chaos. When an evil entity leads to the capture of her friends, Maria is pulled into a battle which will both answer her questions and present her with more impossible choices and losses.

Dani Resh's satisfyingly complex fantasy ideally will be chosen by prior readers of Maria's exploits in Compass to Vinland, which opened with the wellsprings of her growing abilities and the underground world that harbors her deepest promise and danger. This audience will welcome Maria's journey as she traverses realms containing the Wrathful, Native Americans, dangerous Siren songs, and the allure of being able to control her abilities to make a difference in more than one world. Maria's personality expands in this book, matching the quandaries of her powers as readers absorb her newfound abilities to confront danger, protect her friends, and make hard choices about the future.

The warnings she receives about the impact of her choices are engrossing portents of potential quicksand along the way: "You must be cautious when traveling over tumultuous, murky waters." Resh crafts a particularly compelling sense of high drama and tension throughout Maria's confrontations, which keeps readers on edge and guessing about outcomes and the consequences of making the wrong choices.

The fast paced and unpredictable twists and turns to the story assure that a wide age range will find it captivating and hard to put down, making Clarity of Sight especially recommended for libraries seeing popularity with Compass to Vinland who want a smooth and captivating continuation of the Underfoot experience.

There was once a young boy who loved scary stories, the scarier the better. His mom read to him about ghosts and goblins, witches and vampires. Because he loved to be read to so much, he wondered if the monsters had someone to read to them. One night, he and his mother traipsed though the night searching for monsters. When he had gathered up all he could find, he read them a bedtime story. Illustrations reminiscent of Maurice Sendak's monsters, along with an endearing storyline, will ensure this book becomes a bedtime favorite for many. (Ages 4-8)

Because she is a math nerd, Talia joins her school's mathlete team (students who compete in math with other schools). Because she is a girl, and the only one on the team, she is ridiculed and shunned by most of the boys on the team. But Talia has something to prove, and she is determined to do so, that is, to show that girls can be just as good as, if not better than, boys at math.
