Synopsis: Now available in a fresh and updated edition of "Your Guide to Making and Being a Good Friend" is an award-winning DIY instructional guide that taught has shown a generation of young people how to build, strengthen, and grow friendships through kindness, respect, humor, and confidence.

Written in a tone that is encouraging, not preachy, light, yet empowering, young readers can tap into the same wisdom, insights, and strategies that made the original so popular. Each chapter now features special bonus material, including self-reflection questions, to help the reader think more intentionally about what it means to be a friend and find the courage to cultivate new and more rewarding relationships.

"Your Guide to Making and Being a Good Friend" begins by challenging young people to self-limit their use of digital devices and social media so they can be more present, approachable, and connected to those around them. Each fast-paced chapter builds on the next, revealing what young and old alike can do to forge more and better friendships: learning the hidden rules that shape relationships, harnessing the power of laughter, mastering small talk and the art of conversation, embracing positivity, and shaking off shyness.

"Your Guide to Making and Being a Good Friend" is essential reading for anyone who wants to beat back loneliness, broaden their social circles, improve their people skills, and build a life with more joy, purpose, and friendship.

Critique: Simply stated, making and keeping friends is a survival skill as old as the human race itself. Friends are vital for our mental health and our social well-being. It also requires effort and insight into what makes us human. Deftly edited by Stan Graeve, this new edition of "Your Guide to Making and Being a Good Friend" is thoroughly 'reader/user' friendly in organization and presentation. Especially and unreservedly recommended for family, middle school, highschool, and community library Relationship/Life Skills collections for young readers ages 10-18, it should be noted for personal reading lists that this paperback edition of "Your Guide to Making and Being a Good Friend" from Boys Town Press is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $7.99).

How Flowers Got Their Colors is a picture book story packed with vivid illustrations by Alejandro Echavez. It tells of a peaceful young shepherd who resides in a valley that comes alive with color every time it rains. Once upon a time there were only three colors in that valley: the green of grass, the blue of water and sky, and yellow for the sun. Everything else was white. What changed?

Adults who choose this engaging story for read-aloud to the very young will delight at how Scott Sollers moves a shepherd bored by his largely black-and-white environment to observe all the colors of the rainbow, tackling how inject that observation into his everyday, mundane, colorless world.

His journey to where the rainbow touches the ground in hopes of catching some of its colors to bring back into his world makes for an engaging tale of wonder, perseverance, and the frustrations involved in chasing rainbows and dreams. Between a helpful, wise neighbor who gives him a clue about more effective rainbow-catching to an innovative new approach to solving his seeming impossible problem, the story guides young readers through colorful creative thinking processes.

Libraries and adults seeking stories that are thought-provoking, engaging, fun, and perfect for cultivating interactive discussions will find How Flowers Got Their Colors a delightful foray into new possibilities. It will encourage kids to not only enjoy the fantasy solution to the shepherd's problem, but the process by which he solves the challenge of a colorless world by contributing something unique to its evolution.

Inspirational and whimsical, this adventure is perfect for a wide audience of young dreamers and doers and their supportive adults.

Synopsis: "Children of the Throne" is moving, hopeful, picture book story about three children who are gazing down from their high-rise windows at leaves hitting the hot pavements.

The summer is hotter than ever before, and the trees are tricked into thinking it is autumn.

They wonder why the grown-ups are pleased by the good weather, rather than worried for the trees. A wise tree shows the children how to conjure rain and look after the forest, but in bravely finding a short-term solution, they inspire and awaken a long-term commitment in the grown ups around them.

Together, they all rediscover the hidden power of reconnecting with nature, setting a topsy-turvy world the right way up, and protecting it for future generations.

Critique: With its underlying message about climate change and the necessity of protecting the natural world, "Children of the Throne" is brought vividly to life by sweeping, emotive, and museum quality artwork from Richard Johnson in an impressively original collaboration with author, poet, and storyteller Joseph Coelho. The Unusual Fart is a picture book for ages 5-8 that tells of Earl, a special child in a small town whose farts are unlike anyone else's. His ability earns him envy and insult from the other children, so Earl runs away from home and makes a wish on a star -that he'll be loved for what he is. Wish granted! But, be careful what you wish for. The magical butterfly that grants Earl's wish also sends him on a wild adventure, during which Earl begins to realize what he had, what he's lost, and that, just maybe, his unusual ability was something that could have enhanced what he already still is - unique.

Marin creates a magical fantasy adventure whose underpinnings offer messages about being gentle, generous, adaptive, and fun. The focus on color, music, and transformative experiences lends excitement to the plot, making it perfect for read-aloud enjoyment and ages beyond its target audience. The butterfly's wisdom is especially inviting and thought-provoking, and will spark discussions among families and reading circles: "The problem is not that you are different; the problem is they are all the same."

With its lively notes of music, art, and insight, The Unusual Fart is highly recommended. Its underlying insights about diversity and acceptance is just the message that needs widespread deliverance and discussion in today's world.

Synopsis: The decisive moments in life - even in the life of a young person - are those pivot points when we're called on to push past our fears and act courageously in the face of injustice and bullying. In How We Learn to Be Brave, Bishop Mariann Budde shows readers examples of how to respond even in the toughest times. Bravery is not a singular occurrence; it's a journey that we can choose to undertake every day and it begins when we're young.

Budde explores the range of decisive moments people of all ages encounter, from the most visible and dramatic (the decision to go), to the internal and personal (the decision to stay), to brave choices made with an eye toward the future (the decision to start), those born of suffering (the decision to accept that which we did not choose), and those that come as surprises (the decision to step up to the plate). Drawing on examples relevant to young readers ranging from Harry Potter to Martin Luther King Jr., she weaves together personal experiences with stories from scripture, history, and pop culture of how adults and kids throughout history have faced these moments and heeded the call to be brave in challenging times.

It also incorporates reflections on God and faith into the bigger picture of learning how to live in a different, better way. The story offers read-aloud adults and young listeners many opportunities for engaging topics ranging for developing a positive attitude to understanding faith's role in the bigger picture of life. When Fanny noticed how rarely Jewish families checked out books about their own history, she had an idea that would influence libraries and readers for decades to come: She decided to host a week-long party to celebrate Jewish books and culture. It was such a success that it launched a national event which has continued uninterrupted for the past 100 years!

Critique: A deftly crafted blending of American Jewish history and biography, and in celebration of a unique and fascinating bit of American literary and bibliophile history, "Fanny's Big Idea: How Jewish Book Week Was Born" by author/storyteller Richard Michelson and artist/illustrator Alyssa Russell is a unique, fun, and unreservedly recommended pick for family, elementary school, and community/public library picture book collections for children ages 6-9. It should be noted that this hardcover edition of "Fanny's Big Idea: How Jewish Book Week Was Born" from Rocky Pond Books is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $10.99).

Editorial Note #2: Alyssa Russell (https://www.alyssarussellillustration.com) is a Ringling College of Art and Design graduate and children's book illustrator of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. Her maternal great-grandparents immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe in the early 1900s due to rampant antisemitism. Since her mother's death in 2018, Alyssa has been dedicated to rediscovering her Jewish identity.

Start with a Teapot: An Unexpected Guide to the Art of Drawing instructs the very young about the rudiments of creating art. It's translated by Daniel Hahn and adopts an especially inviting drawing method that shows how to connect different shapes and images in unusual ways. To draw an elephant, for example, young artists can begin by drawing a teapot. To create a horse, the elephant is modified. And a camel or unicorn drawing can emerge from the foundations of the horse. This approach encourages the very young to understand shapes, the rudiments of drawing, and how illustrations can build upon one another, making for an important series of lessons that adults will want to use to guide budding young artists.

Synopsis: Set against the backdrop of the 2008 Great Recession, this story follows twelve-year-old Anne Watch as her world changes in an instant. After her father loses his job, she watches him slowly unravel, turning to alcohol in a desperate attempt to cope with the weight of providing for his family. With money tight and tension rising at home, Anne, a brave and resilient young girl, must sacrifice her summer plans and work in her grandfather's onion patch to help pay for her sister Libby's preschool tuition.

Life on the farm is isolating. With no Wi-Fi and no cell towers for miles, Anne feels cut off from everything familiar. Her only companions are a scruffy mongrel dog and two kind neighbors, Ozzy and Steven, whom she visits at the local dairy. Yet even these small comforts can't quiet her growing fear that her father's worsening state may put Libby in harm's way.

Determined to protect her sister, Anne forms a bold plan - one that involves navigating the winding waters of the Yellowstone River hoping to get back home before it's too late. As she ventures into the unknown, Anne must draw on every bit of courage and resilience she has. Will her risky journey bring her home in time to save her sister, or will the river carry her farther from everything she loves?

Critique: Missing U is a standout adolescent novel that powerfully illustrates how a global crisis can transform the course of a single family's life. Anne quickly realizes the gravity of their situation when her father loses his job, thrusting the family into uncertainty. Anne and Libby are beautifully drawn characters readers can easily relate to, reflecting the fears, hopes, and hardships families face during turbulent times. Their emotional journey will resonate with readers, creating a strong connection to the characters and their experiences.

Synopsis: LA-LA Forest Park, a place where magic lurks in every nook and cranny, holds its secrets close. No one understands this better than Ed Williams, a schoolboy with an insatiable curiosity and a thirst for adventure.

When school shuts down for the winter due to unexpected hot and humid extreme climate changes, Ed seizes the opportunity to explore the park he's always yearned to visit. As he steps off the familiar pavement, he's joined by two unexpected companions: a talkative stray dog and a squawking black crow, both on the hunt for food.

Deep within the forest, Ed discovers two extraordinary metal dinosaurs - Recyclosaurus and Springusaurus - creations of the inventive Professor MicroChip. The dinosaurs, with their playful drumming and shuffle dances, bring a sense of joy and amusement to the otherwise serious issue of environmental conservation. However, their triumph is bittersweet: local wildlife, including migrating birds and a red-eared ocean turtle, struggles to survive in waters polluted and thrown into chaos by turbulent currents.

Critique: The Recyclosaurus and EggBangers is a book that is told with imagination and heart. This story introduces young readers to critical issues like climate change, deforestation, pollution, and conservation, all in a way that's accessible and engaging.

Through his adventures with animal and robotic companions, Ed not only learns about these issues but also realizes the power of individual action in making a difference. This inspiring message is at the heart of the story, aiming to enlighten and inspire young readers about caring for our planet.

A.R. Trent weaves together adventure, humor, and an important environmental message, creating a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. With its vibrant characters, whimsical setting, and heartfelt story, The Recyclosaurus and EggBangers is a must-read for children and families seeking fun, excitement, and a meaningful lesson about caring for our planet.

Synopsis: Thirteen-year-old Peter Penstimon imagined a summer filled with sunshine, surfing, and the occasional slow afternoon - not a decaying family estate alive with restless spirits. But the moment his parents whisk him off to Watchwood Farm, their long-abandoned ancestral home, his hopes for a carefree break vanish.

Watchwood wastes no time unveiling its secrets. Ghosts linger in every corridor, desperate to reveal a mystery buried for centuries. The atmospheric storytelling will immerse you in the world of Watchwood, making you feel you're right there with Peter.

With the sharp-witted and daring Hadley Hawkins, granddaughter of the estate's groundskeeper, Peter begins a perilous search for answers surrounding his Uncle Lincoln's disappearance and the dark legacy hidden deep within Watchwood's history. The characters are so engaging that you'll find yourself deeply invested in their journey.
