In the Course of My Walks is an anthology of reflections by August Derleth (1909-1971), a
resident of Sauk City, Wisconsin who sought the meaning of life in the natural beauty
surrounding his home, from the woods, marshes, and waters to the beasts and birds. Derleth
identified strongly with Henry David Thoreau, and even considered his home near the Wisconsin
River to be "Walden West". Derleth's writings draw heavily upon his observations of nature
during his daily walks, and span a gamut of topics from natural history essays to philosophy to
narratives of the natural world and more. Written by an erudite nature lover, for erudite nature
lovers, In the Course of My Walks is highly recommended for both personal and public library
collections.

One of the bleakest times in post-war American politics were the 'Red Scare' years of
McCarthyism, when the junior senator from Wisconsin was able to capitalize on a wide spread
fear of Communism to corrupt the American political system and subvert the United States
