Catholics - especially white Catholics - can better advocate for justice and equality, in a society
harmed by systemic racism. A White Catholic's Guide to Racism and Privilege cross-examines
the difficult problem of systemic racism, perpetrated discrimination enacted by society as a
whole, evidenced by such horrifying statistics as the substantially higher risk of death for black
women from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth (primarily due to reduced access
to health care, and discrimination within the health care system). One of the first steps an
individual can take to combat racism is to learn how to listen, and not reflexively dismiss the
experiences and testimonies of nonwhite people (no matter how uncomfortable hearing them out
may be). Though written from a Catholic perspective, A White Catholic's Guide to Racism and
Privilege is highly recommended for readers of all faiths. It should be noted for personal reading
