Silas Deane: Revolutionary War Diplomat and Politician
Milton C. Van Vlack
McFarland & Company
PO Box 611
Jefferson NC 28640
9780786472529 $40.00 www.mcfarlandpub.com
Silas Deane: Revolutionary War Diplomat and Politician is a biography of an American
Revolutionary War era diplomat who tends to be remembered as a traitor like his boyhood friend
Benedict Arnold, when he is remembered at all. But are such harsh characterizations truly
justified, or appropriate? Deane was politically active, capable, and charismatic; his success
earned him the ire, resentment, and slander of envious enemies. In 1776, Congress appointed him
as America's first secret agent to obtain military supplies from France for Washington's army.
Though Deane faltered in his mission, which was ultimately undercut by his inability to properly
manage and keep track of his expenses, and though Deane himself has been recorded as privately
doubting that the United States would succeed as a nation, his positive contributions to the
fledgling country do not deserve to be overlooked by history. Silas Deane: Revolutionary War
Diplomat and Politician does not try to minimize the contributions of other figures of the
American Revolution, notably Benjamin Franklin, but does strive to set the record straight about
a man who, after his toil on behalf of America, lived out the rest of his days reviled and
impoverished, finally dying under mysterious circumstances (there is speculation to this day that
he was poisoned). Highly recommended, especially for public library biography collections.

war between shape-changing "lycans" and human beings. Humans have oppressed the lycans
with laws and drugs, forcing them to live in a state approaching slavery; the unrest of the lycans

red moon might just mark the dawn of apocalypse for not only humans and lycans, but also
civilization as a whole! Exciting and sometimes brutal, Red Moon is not a story of clear-cut
heroes and villains, but rather of survivors and shades of grey. Highly recommended. 18 CDs, 22

leisure she has grown accustomed to - she's even locked out of her blog. She has no option but to
move in with her mother, plus she's required by the courts to attend weekly "divorce recovery"
therapy sessions. But when she and the three other women notice suspicious behavior in their
"divorce coach", they decide to seek closure in a much more unorthodox style! Tongue-in-cheek
humor, wit, and sophistication are the hallmarks of this eyebrow-raising life adventure, sure to
prove a popular pick for public library audiobook collections. 14 CDs, 17.5 hours.

Candelabra: My Life with Liberace is the unabridged, autobiographical audiobook in which
Thorson tells all about his lifelong relationship with the famous Liberace. Thorson was

good, the bad, and the ugly of Liberace's life, from the overbearing mother who all but forced
him into a concert career, to his entanglements with the Mafia in Las Vegas, to his personal
narcissism and lavish taste for excess (Liberace once sent Thorson to a plastic surgeon to have
Thorson's face remade in Liberace's image), to his luxury homes, fleet of house dogs, and
extensive list of lovers. A glimpse of Liberace's final days when he was dying of AIDS, and his
deathbed reconciliation with Thorson, rounds out this fascinating portrait, which forms the basis

trauma and refocus on learning the truth about the murder. But someone is out to destroy Eli's
name at any cost - someone who likely won't hesitate to kill again! Whiskey Beach is an

"Dressing Modern Maternity" is a fascinating history and showcase of a postwar company selling
innovative, practical maternity fashions in Dallas, Texas. Begun in 1938 by Elsie Frankfurt and
Edna Frankfurt Ravkind, Page Boy Maternity Clothing broke new ground in maternity fashion by
combining "engineering, business, and PR genius" to create comfortable stylish and practical
maternity wear for the modern woman. The life of page Boy Maternity Clothing spanned
decades, from 1939 to 1994. Here is the intricate understory of two courageous, astute Jewish
businesswomen who had what it takes to succeed in a new fashion field. Flawless research,
careful editing, and anecdotal detail help make "Dressing Modern Maternity" a page-turning
fashion hit, along with over 47 pages of black and white illustrations and 16 pages of full color
plate illustrations. Winner of the inaugural Lou Halsell Rodenberger Prize in History and
