There have been many biographies published on Dostoevsky, but Thomas Freeborn's new Dostoevsky (Haus Publishers, 1904341276, $15.95) departs from the norm in including an assessment of the writer's times as well as his life and achievements. Freeborn packages his presentation well, including in-depth coverage of the state of the Russian world which fostered the writer's fame. New additions to the Hesperus Press imprint assure that lesser-known works by established classic writers do not go unheralded. New additions to the series include Lorenzino de Medici's Apology For A Murder (18439-10799, $12.00), analyzing the author's own murderer and the murderer's own defense of his actions. Aphra Behn's The Lover's Watch (1843910748, $12.00) tells of a desirable woman's analysis of the optimum hours for romance and the routines involved in wooing one of the opposite sex. Antoine Francois Prevost's Manon Lescaut (1843910756, $12.00) tells of a young man already worn by the brutalities of life, until a stranger persuades him to reveal his troubles and embark upon new discoveries. New to the Vintage UK 'Living Texts' series by Margaret Reynolds and Jonathan Noakes ($12.00 each) are contemporary focuses on writers' major works paired with in-depth interviews. A.S. Byatt's Essential Guide (0099452-219) covers all her major themes, narrative techniques, and writings; Iris Murdoch (0099452227) covers Murdoch's works of literature and reveals the source of her ideas; and American Fiction: The Essential Guide (0099445069) provides an overview analysis of the major themes to American classics Catcher In The Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird, Native Son, and Catch-22. Randy E. Barnett's Restoring The Lost Consitution (0691115850, $26.95) reinforces the truth that the U.S. Constitution found in today's texts and under glass in Washington is not the same as that enforced today by the Supreme Court. Barnett here argues that indeed the Constitution has been changed especially since the 1930s, where the courts have been revising its basic concepts, providing amendments to eliminate the portions which protect liberty from the power of government. A frightening treatise evolves which analyzes governmental powers, Constitutional changes over the decades, and how the lost clauses of the original Constitution can be restored. Dale Eickelman and James Piscatori's Muslim Politics (0691120536, $16.95) appears in an updated paperwork version to explore how the politics of Islam are reflected in the daily lives of Muslims around the world. Included within the discussion are new considerations of how 9/11 and the Iraq War have changed and reshaped the politics and social pressures of the Muslim world, making Muslim Politics an important guide.

www.randomhouse.com/teens
0385729596 $15.95 www.amazon.com

While Pete Nelson's Left For Dead was written with teens in mind, it'd be a shame to limit its audience to high school students alone, that's why it is featured in the Library Bookwatch to point out what can happen when a determined eleven-year-old researcher decides to solve a World War II mystery. The worst disaster in Naval history would have gone down as a mystery even with the efforts of survivors who knew their ship's captain wasn't to blame for its sinking, were it not for the determination of eleven-year-old Hunter Scott, whose history fair project choice would change history itself. Scott's crusade to restore the captain's good name exposed an incredible story, captured movingly by Pete Nelson in Left For Dead.

The detailed gardening books from Timber Press aren't for the novice who wants little more than bright color photos and a few plant recommendations: they are perfect picks for the gardening library collection specializing in horticulture and informative references, and these latest releases add a host of fine new references to the pack. Christopher Lee's Meadows (08819-26280, $29.95) may look like a coffee table book with Jonathan Buckley's bright color photos gracing cover and interior; but it's much more. 'Wild Gardening' is promoted, from harboring aggressive grasses and meadow plants to establishing a prairie or a wildflower habitat; and this means Meadows comes packed not only with color photos but specific tips on how to create a naturally-appearing meadow environment from scratch. Keith Wiley's On The Wild Side (0881926361, $34.95) goes even further, promoting wild flower colonies and natural landscapes based on his inspirations from rural England and world settings. Chapters in On The Wild Side explore different plant groups, how they occur in the wild, and how they may be translated to a garden setting. Or, incorporate greenery into one's very living quarters with the help of Nigel Dunnett and Noel Kingsbury's Planting Green Roofs And Living Walls (088192640X, $34.95), an innovative horticultural field which teaches how to blend greenery with roofs and walls. Both large-scale and small domestic examples from around the world show how green roofs may be created and maintained without compromising either roof nor garden. All three of these outstanding titles from Timber Press are excellent gardening references.

Extravaganza King: Robert Barnet And Boston Musical Theater by Anne Alison Barnet (writer, researcher, public speaker, and the great-grandaughter of Robert Barnet) is the biographical story of a remarkable man and which will bring him out of an undeserved obscurity by documenting his singular accomplishments and contributions to the history of American musical theatre. Robert Barnet (1853-1933) was a successful sugar merchant who wrote and directed incredibly popular musical theatricals for the First Corps of Cadets, a volunteer militia of young, upper-class Boston businessmen seeking money for an armory to use in defense against feared immigrant revolts or riots. In a tradition reminiscent of Shakespeare, men played all the roles, and Barnet himself was known to take upon the role of Queen Isabella of Spain in "1492", his most famous work. Black-and-white photographs, a wealth of information from scrapbooks and family memorabilia, extensive research and more follow Barnet's spectacular successes, and eventual enduring failures, when he moved in 1908 to New York City but was unable to adapt his talents to people's changing tastes in musical entertainment. A lively and fascinating true tale.

1594030502 $24.95 www.encounterbooks.com

Karl Zinsmeister was a journalist embedded with the 82nd Airborne and spent several weeks with th U.S. soldiers who, in early months of 2004, were engaged in raids against Iraqi insurgents, engaged in daily diplomacy with ordinary Iraqis trying to re-establish their lives in a land torn by an on-going and seemingly escalating guerrilla struggle against the American forces and against each other. In Dawn Over Baghdad: How The U.S. Military Is Using Bullets And Ballots To Remake Iraq, Zinsmeister shows how young American soldiers are choking off a terrorist insurrection. This is an eye-witness story that is very much at odds with the typical media sound bites that substitute for a more in-depth and personally observed account that is gripping, perceptive, unflinching, and cautiously optimistic. Dawn Over Baghdad is highly recommended reading -- especially in the current American political season where American involvement in Iraqi could well be the determining factor in our national elections this coming November.

Franklin, Jefferson, & Madison: On Religion And The State by Constitutional history expert and scholar Gregory Schaaf (Co-coordinator of the Center for Indigenous Arts & Cultures, an historical archive and museum located in Sante Fe, New Mexico) showcases the life stories of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison with a special emphasis upon their respective religious views and expressions of faith as recorded in their correspondences and other writings as revealed in their personal papers housed in the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and other library collections. These three "founding fathers" shared the similar views that one of the most fundamental rights in the new American republic was that of the Freedom of Religion; that no government official (or anyone else) should be able to interfere with any citizen's free exercise of whatever their religious beliefs and practices should be; that the newly formed United State of America should not adopt any religions as "official"; that federal tax dollars should never be allocated to the support of any particular church or support any specific religious group; that all of the different religions, Christian or non-Christian should be respected; and that the doctrine of Church/State separation should be maintained from the local municipal level to that of the national government. Franklin, Jefferson, & Madison: On Religion And The State offers a superbly presented contribution to what our political heritage truly was with respect to the issues of Church and State, and is a timely and very highly recommended contribution to the contemporary national dialogue over the proper role of the religious community with respect to the secular government, and the secular government's involvement with religious issues.

Walden Pond captures the social, political and conservation issues revolving around Waden over the decades.

Issues of race and class are no longer theories of fairness and ethics; they are now undermining the American dream: that's Sheryll Cashin's principle contention in The Failures Of Integration (1586482-12X, $26.00), a hard-hitting set of realities: among them, that black people do not crave integration. Black people wish the same access to the good things in life: an integrated work place, access to support and institutions, and the freedom to pursue dreams: this doesn't necessarily translate to integration across the board. Chapters consider the real impact of segregation on American goals. Geoffrey Nunberg's Going Nuclear (1586482343, $18.95) provides an intriguing focus on language and modern times, linking issues of modern words and new phrasing to social and political changes. It's hard to peg or narrow the prospective audience of Going Nuclear: Nunberg's linguistic analysis should appeal across the board to any interested in how the English language changes. Henry Clay Anderson's Separate, But Equal (158648236X, $16.95) presents some important images from the segregated south: a host of black and white photos from archives accompanied by an in-depth essay by Clifton L. Taulbert. This memoir marks the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education: its pairing of memories by writer Clifton Taulbert with stunning Southern scenes makes for a fitting contribution to this anniversary.

Continued population growth, expansion of consumption patterns, and maldistribution of power are in the way of a sustainable society: that's the ongoing argument of One With Nineveh, a focus on politics and the human future which provides a cautionary story of pride and the results of ignoring environmental signs. Our planet is accelerating toward environmental suicide, say the Ehrlichs: chapters focus on both technological and cultural misconceptions leading to disaster.

Kurt Jacobsen's Maverick Voices (07425-33964, $16.95) is not to be missed by any with an interest in political and cultural challenges to the status quo: including articles by Daniel Ellsberg, John Nichols, Studs Terkel and other scholarly social critics, Maverick Voices brings together a virtual melting pot of interviews with top modern thinkers and writers of our times who dare to confront the status quo of theories on social and political standards. Douglas Booth's Hooked On Growth (07-42527182, $16.95) offers an even more important survey on economic addictions and their environmental impact. Chapters add important considerations to the available sustainability literature by pointing out just where sustainability goes wrong: in the concept of positive economic growth which requires unfettered consumption patterns to succeed. Otis L. Grapham Jr.'s Unguarded Gates (0742522288, $26.95) provides an intriguing historical survey of America's immigration crisis, using a scholarly focus to examine historic immigration policies and pressures and American debates and choices, from the first wave of immigrants of the 1880s to modern times. Placing the immigrant waves in historical perspective in Unguarded Gates allows for a more studied analysis of security risks and population growth issues of modern America, and this should be a part of any college-level collection on immigrant social issues.

Nel Noddings
Cambridge University Press
40 West 20th St., NY, NY 10011-4211
0521807638 $30.00 www.cambridge.org

In Happiness And Education, author and academician Nel Noddings (Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita, Standford University) draws upon her years of experience, expertise and research as a teacher, administrator, and curriculum developer in public schools to address the very specific issue of the relationship of happiness to that of the experience of education and why, although parental expectations are quite clear that happiness is a kind of byproduct of education, it is not normal mentioned as one of the principle aims of education. Professor Noddings explores what it means to be happy, and then goes on to address how educators can help children to understand what happiness is. Criticizing an almost exclusive focus on economic well-being as the approved outcome of educational accomplishment, Professor Noddings emphasizes the contributions education provides with respect to making a home, parenting, developing character and interpersonal growth, identifying and engaging in work that is satisfying, participating effectively in a political democracy, and ways in which we can make schools and classrooms happy places of learning and intellectual exploration. Happiness And Education is especially commended to the attention of public and private school teachers, and administrative policy makers as informed, thoughtful, and though-provoking reading.

Kenneth Robbins
NewSouth Books
PO Box 1588, Montgomery, AL 36102
1588381420 $25.95 1-800-8222-9796

The City Of Churches by Kenneth Robbins is a fictionalized retelling of the 1963 Birmingham church bombings that arose out the movement to end segregation in Alabama and throughout the American south. It was a time of police attack dogs and water hoses, protest marches, public accommodation sit-ins, and an increasing awareness of the injustices of "Jim Crow" laws discriminating against African-American citizens. Two men (a black handyman and a white polices officer) were killed by the same stick of dynamite in 1963, and in 1993 their sons have returned south to discover the truth behind the deaths of their fathers. The intertwining of the modern setting and the racial tensions of the 1960s are deftly interwoven into a story that is compelling, moving, and illuminating. The City Of Churches is strongly recommended for personal reading lists and community library collections.

The Daguerreotype is an ambitious and engaging historical novel by Patrick Gregory which covers seventy years in the life of a woman, from her girlhood in a mid-19th century fashionable London seminary to her death on a remote Iowa farm at the outset of the Depression. The text is a controlled, careful prose that fully showcases the psychological ambiance of an era now gone as we follow the life adventures of Elizabeth Gow, who being young and ambitious gave up the prospect of a teaching position in England to accompany her widowed father to America and an uncertain future that takes her from Philadelphia to the Midwest where she marries, raises a family, and struggles to adjust her once youthful ideals and aspirations with the harsh realities of adult responsibilities. The Daguerreotype is a thoroughly rewarding and erudite reading experience, one which will linger in the mind long after the book is set back upon the shelf.

Or take Frederick Ramsay's Artscape: A Mystery (1590581229, $24.95): here is a deliciously complex setting involving a valuable art collection, smuggling, international espionage, and a new professor's frustrating immersion in international intrigue and trouble. Betty Webb's Desert Shadows: Publishing Can Be Murder (159058113X, $24.95) provides a satisfying Lena Jones mystery which begins with a notable publisher's poisoning at an annual convention. Involve a Pima India and an Arizona defender convinced of his innocence and you have a fast-paced story line indeed. John McEvoy's Blind Switch (1590580958, $24.95) at first glance would seem appealing to fans of Dick Frances, with its horse perspective and mystery; but the potential for its reaching far beyond the horsie set is immense. Retired amateur boxer Jack Doyle finds himself unexpectedly unemployed and must accept an offer to fix a horse race to make ends meet. His involvement with the underworld and FBI leads him from frying pan to fire in a complex series of scandal and events. Kerry Greenwood's Murder In Montparnasse (1590580427, $24.95) provides a Phryne Fisher mystery set in 1920s Australia where seven soldiers unknowing witness a Paris murder and still face demise from their knowledge ten years alter. It's up to Phryne to outpace the murderer while dealing with the marriage of her lover and other social disasters. Intriguing action results.

James P. Hogan's Kicking The Sacred Cow (0743488288, $24.00) is written by a notable science fiction writer with a host of fiction credits to his name; but this differs in its examination of science fiction dogma and controversies in modern science. Instances of modern 'scientific beliefs' which rest shakily on dogma are examined closely, from Darwinism and the big bang to biochemistry's implications. An intriguing approach. John Ringo's Emerald Sea (0743488334, $25.00) tells of a future world of paradise ended by a council which goes to war, leaving its people to suffer. It's up to Duke Talbot to make contact with scattered mer-folk to convince them to side with freedom in this novel of future politics and battles, written by a notable science fiction author. Harry Turtledove's 3XT (0743488350, $25.00) provides yet another powerful alternate history novel by one who has earned his credentials for past powerhouses of alternate settings. Here fans will find a real treat: an omnibus of three offering two complete novels Noninterference And Earthgrip and Kaleidoscope, a selection of short fantasy and science fiction 'what if' stories. A treasure trove of winning plots. Bill Faucett and Brian Thomsen edit Masters Of Fantasy (0743588229, $25.00): the two have long edited fantasy and science fiction works and here pack in top short stories by David Weber, Mercedes Lackey, Mickey Reichart and more new adventures from popular contemporary genre writers. James H. Schmitz's Witches Of Karres (0743488377, $16.00) receives an excellent edit by veteran Eric Flint as it tells of one Captain Pausert, unlucky in life, who thinks his battered starship has finally brought him luck until he frees three slave children from their masters and finds himself at odds with his fiance and his entire world. An engrossing story evolves.

P.M.H. Atwater's New Children And Near-Death Experiences (1591430208, $16.00) is not to be missed for any parent who would consider the effects of near death on a child. Atwater maintains that a child who has returned from such an experience is not the same child he's been 'rewired and refined', and she provides evidence to support her idea that these children have experienced many elemental changes in brain functioning as a result. An intriguing study by one of the earliest researcher to investigate the near-death experience; especially since relatively little focus has been provided on children prior to New Children And Near-Death Experiences. Zecharia Sitchin's Earth Chronicles Expeditions: Journeys To The Mythical Past (1591430364, $24.00) blends archaeology and spirituality, is written by the best-selling author of The Earth Chronicles, and examines the basic research and expeditions resulting from Sitchin's prior conclusions that ancient myths were actually recollections of factual events based on extraterrestrial visitors to Earth. A fascinating theory and supportive evidence comes alive in this sequel.

With the able help of Anthony Walton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar departs from his world famous expertise as a professional basketball player to to research and write the story of Leonard Smith, his high school mentor who was a member of the 761st Battalion. This was the first all-black American army tank battalion to see combat in World War II. Interviewing the unit's seventy survivors, what emerges is the story of men who fought in defense of America despite often being compelled to endure conditions of institutional racism that were as evil as anything the Nazis and the German army presented on the field of battle. This was the unit of African-American soldiers that fought with General Paton in the Battle of the Bulge, helped to liberate the concentration camp at Mauthausen, and distinguished itself with honor, bravery, dignity, and perseverance. Superbly narrated by Richard Allen who does full and complete justice to this complete and unabridged audio cassette edition, Brothers In Arms is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal and community library audiobook collections.

Agatha Christie's Destination Unknown (2672404004, $29.95) receives Emilia Fox's warm voice and presentation as it tells of a beautiful but bereft young woman about to end it all until a British agent intervenes, bringing romance and a dangerous mission into her life. Two new excellent audio cd packages are winning productions highly recommended for audio listeners who want only the best. Scott Brick's name may be less familiar than those of Hill, Bean and other veterans, but it's no less powerful and comes no less highly recommended as an appropriate pairing for Brad Meltzer's The Zero Game (1586216031, $31.98). Two individuals are playing a secretive, mysterious game: one which hides a secret which can shake Washington to its roots and change the world. It's the nature of this dangerous game which comes alive in The Zero Game's equally explosive narrative form. Carmen Bin Ladin's Inside The Kingdom (1586217380, $31.98) is written by the sister-in-law of Osama and that authority in and of itself would make Inside The Kingdom riviting. Carmen, half-Swiss and half-Persian, married into the Bin Laden family in 1974: her blend of memoir and autobiography comes from the point of view of being an outsider among the Bin Laden wives, making Inside The Kingdom even more compelling.

Highbridge Audio's new cd arrivals are excellent listener's picks. Take Car Talk: Born Not To Run (1565118812, $16.95), for example: here's an hour of car-oriented songs perfect for the car cd player which 'tell it like it is', from Auto Cody Experience's 'Sunfit To Drive' to Gravel Train's 'Built To Crash'. Hilarious songs, this misses only Dave Edmunds' 'Crawling from the Wreckage'. Not had enough? Car Talk's Hatchback Of Notre Dame (1565118804, $13.95) provides more radio from the Tappet Brothers who bring Car Talk to life: this culling hilarious 'car talk' classics from the show. Speaking of shows, Garrison Keillor fans will find Commercial Radio: A Prairie Home Companion (1565118960, $14.95) another not to miss: recorded from live broadcasts, Commercial Radio presents would-be adds both fun and thought-provoking on such matters as The Hotel Minnesota, The Cafe Boeuf, and more 'so-called sponsors.' David Brenner's I Think There's Another Terrorist In My Soup (1565118391, $22.95) is performed by the author and also blends social commentary with humor: his reflections blend world problems and personal troubles in an inviting, fun set of vignettes. Speaking of inviting, Steve Almond's Candyfreak (15651-1910X, $26.95) was featured as a book in our 'Culinary Corner' section and here appears with equal joy to delight fans of both industry and sweets. When paired with Oliver Wyman's inviting descriptions, Candyfreak is even more lively on cd than in print. Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife (1565118278, $36.95) provides an 'odd duck' theme and a fine paired narration by Maggi-Meg Reed and Christopher Burns, who bring alive the story of mid-life first marriages and a man diagnosed with involuntary time-travel illness. His spontaneous disappearances and returns provide a different flavor to his wife's life and make The Time Traveler's Wife impossible to predict.

The Healthy Bird Cookbook: A Lifesaving Nutritional Guide And Recipe Collection by experienced bird trainer and author Robin Deutsch is a unique and unusual pet ownership reference guide. It is a general introduction to the nutritional needs of pet birds, including notes on how to feed them from weaning onward, offering an assortment of healthy recipes to supplement a bird's diet along with standard seeds (which are largely "empty calories" junk food for birds) and pellets (which are not guaranteed to provide all the vitamins and minerals a bird needs by themselves, especially since pellet-making processes can destroy nutrients). Of particular value to all bird owners is the warning section of toxic foods that must never, ever be given to one's pet bird, such as chocolate, a deadly poison to many animals, or fruit pits and the flesh of fruit that is in contact with the pit. Even cooking with non-stick utensils must never be done in a household with birds, as non-stick kitchenware emits colorless, odorless fumes that can be lethal. A pioneering guide highly recommended especially for owners and caretakers of pet birds from common budgies to exotic amazonian beauties.

1590511018 $25.00 www.otherpress.com

Dante's Cure: A Journey Out Of Madness by Daniel Dorman (Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, School of Medicine University of California at Los Angeles) traces the history of Catherine, a woman suffering from severe schizophrenia in the 1970s and was admitting at a UCLA hospital as an adolescent anorexic who was suicidal and heard murderous voices in her head. Dr. Dorman describe's Catherine's condition, her background, and moments of interpretative breakthroughs, and his work with her in resistance to collegial pressures to medicate Catherine. Dr. Dorman set up in private practice and continued his sessions with Catherine. Gradually she was able to begin a recovery, live in an apartment, attend college, and eventually qualified as a psychiatric nurse. Of special interest is Dr. Dorman's epilogue setting out his rationale in opposition to the dominant psychiatric view of schizophrenia as a "brain disorder" requiring medication. He persuasively advocates a humanist, patient-doctor collaborationist approach as illustrated by his years of work with Catherine. Dante's Cure is a welcome and valued contribution to psychiatric medicine and a recommended addition to personal, professional, and Mental Health Studies library collections.

Rabkin (Professor, Department of Government, Cornell University) is a forceful argument that America must stay true to its decisions first and the will of other nations such as European countries and even international law. Bush as an example of a supposed attempt to restrict American sovereignty, The Case For Sovereignty explores the lessons of history to create a detailed, well-researched, exhortively argued an unapologetic manifesto for daring to remain at international odds as a nation.

Beginning with his widowed mother, a female slave who tended him in childhood, and the Bedouin woman who fostered him; to his marriage to Khadija (a wealthy businesswoman from Mecca), to his four daughters, and Umm Salamah (one of his later wives upon whom he relied for military and political advice), to Aisha, another of his wives in whose presence he experienced revelations, women played import-ant, influential roles in the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The Scimitar And The Veil is a popular history and survey of fifty Muslim women and their contributions ranging from the very birth of Islam in the 7th Century CE to the 19th Century CE. These women numbered queens, poets, musicians, storytellers, mystics, and saints among their ranks. Most readers of mysteries know the author of the 'Hardy Boys' teen mystery series was the elusive Franklin W. Dixon but he was a man who never existed. The real founder of Hardy Boys was one Edward Stratemeyer, founder of a children's book empire who began as a mere newspaper reporter with dreams of becoming a famous novelist. Between 1927 and 1947 one Leslie McFarlane wrote the first twenty-four Hardy Boys mysteries for $100.00 per book, agreeing to the anonymity demanded by Stratemeyer's syndicate and starting a trend which was to continue in later books. The Secret Of The Hardy Boys exposes the true grit: a syndicate which built a virtual children's book empire, promoting and development of children's literature in North America.
