Best known for her classic novel "Little House on the Prairie", which she would later publish in 1935, Wilder was also seasoned in political, relationship, and practical matters. Her essays range from how women could be equal partners with their husbands, how they should stay true to their new freedoms including the recently won right to vote, how to maintain traditional family values in a rapidly changing world, and much more, as well as relatively mundane tasks such as raising chickens and managing one's time. New articles in this edition include "Making the Best of Things", "Economy in Egg Production", "Spic, Span, and Beauty", "Magic in Plain Foods", and more. A singularly wonderful portrait of a beloved woman's wisdom; though Wilder was indeed a product of her time, many of the insights contained are truly transcendent. Highly recommended.

Off the Page
Carole Burns, editor
W.W. Norton & Company, Inc.
500 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10110
9780393330885, $14.95

Off the Page: Writers Talk About Beginnings, Ending, and Everything in Between is an anthology of interviews with a diversity of authors describing the creation process of a literary work. Joyce Carol Oates begins and ends her writing process creating and reworking the beginning of a book; A.S. Byatt assembles a novel from "blocks of color"; and E.L. Doctorow crafts a story from a specific and compelling image that often springs to mind without context. From the intersection of sex, love, and literature (Martin Amis insists that good sex is impossible to write about!) to the reader's part in the creative process (or at least, the effect that readers' imagined reaction has on the mind of the author), Off the Page runs the gamut of influences and effects upon the evolution of a book. Originally typed directly on interviewer Carole Burns' computer as she listened to the interviewees and posted in real-time on the Web, Off the Page is undeniably authentic in his honest portrayal of the authors' mission to write literature worth reading.

Welfare and Charity in the Antebellum South
Timothy James Lockley
University Press of Florida
University of Florida, 15 Northwest 15th Street, Gainesville, FL 32611-2079
9780813031736, $59.95 1-800-226-3822

Welfare and Charity in the Antebellum South is a scholarly examination of public welfare efforts in the American South prior to the Civil War, and a much-needed counterbalance to studies of such issues during the period that tend to focus upon the urban centers of the North. In the nineteenth century, private acts of charity were almost exclusively meted out to whites, ranging from the founding of state-supported schools, orphanages, and health care to food relief efforts. Because of these charitable works, the poor whites of the south had less resentment of the rich, and as a group they were more willing to risk their lives in military service along with the rich slaveholders as the Civil War threatened. Welfare and Charity in the Antebellum South includes careful comparisons between the upper and lower South, between urban and rural areas, and between welfare efforts in the South and the North, as well as correcting the myth that Northern charity was more widespread. A welcome addition to American History shelves and reference collections, especially recommended for college libraries.

2501 West 15th Street, Lawrence, KS 66049
9780700615582, $39.95 1-785-864-4154

Martin Nie (associate professor of natural resource policy in the College of Forestry and Conservation, University of Montana) presents The Governance of Western Public Lands: Mapping Its Present and Future, a big-picture survey of the history and future of America's public lands, with especial attention paid to the contentious debate concerning how they should be used, and to what extent their wildlife should be protected. Examining both individual case studies (such as that of conflict over the forests in southeast Alaska) and broader general dilemmas of opposing viewpoints concerning national resource management, The Governance of Western Public Lands offers a balanced, serious-minded assessment of both present and future needs. "Experimentation could help ground some of the ideological debates discussed... We could use a few concrete cases to examine the virtues and drawbacks of trying something different on our public lands. Experimentation might thus give a strong shot of pragmatism to public land politics by rejecting sweeping generalities and abstract theorizing in favor of more practical experience and empirical knowledge. Instead of hypotheticals, we could focus our attention on the outcome of a particular project." Highly recommended.

PO Box 1400, Downers Grove, IL 605151426
9780830833658, $16.95 1-800-843-9487

Written by father of three Roger Cross, who served thirty-eight years of ministry to tens of thousands of kids through Youth for Christ, How We Make Our Kids Angry: Suggestions for Parents Who Want to Change is a parenting guide about respecting children while simultaneously providing them with the boundaries they need. Though addressed to Christian parents, How We Make Our Kids Angry is about principles of good parenting universal to all faiths. Chapters discuss the perils of expecting kids to fill adult roles, unjustly pressuring a child to fulfill one's own fantasies, playing favorites, and other behaviors that may not be unconsciously done but are none the less harmful. "Consider and Respond" questions at the end of each chapter round out this thoughtful parenting book grounded in practical wisdom. "Understand the difference between discipline and punishment. The difference has to do with motives. The motive of punishment is to make sure the child experiences pain for stepping over the line. Discipline, while it usually involves some kind of pain (a swat, being grounded, privileges withheld, etc.) is motivated by correcting and improving behavior. Punishment can often be administered in anger, while discipline is more controlled and measured."

2715 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218-4363
9780801888335, $35.00 1-800-537-5487

Every year people are attacked by animals whose bite carries poison that can cripple and kill. While these creatures (including snakes, spiders, marine life, mammals, amphibians, frogs, birds, and centipedes) are justifiably to be feared and respected, they can also be inherently fascinating for the beauty, their lifestyle, and their contributions to the ecosystems and habitats where they dwell. A coffee table style book that is impressively illustrated throughout with full color photography, "Venomous Animals Of The World" by naturalist, adventure, wildlife expert, and conservationist Steve Backshall provides the non-specialist general reader with a descriptive account of more than sixty animals whose toxins are the most lethal and evolved in response to the need to both attack and defend within the animal kingdom. Informed and informative, "Venomous Animals Of The World" offers such observations as poisons being classified ingested toxins while venoms are injected toxins; the pharmaceutical industry has been able to use animal toxins as the basis for many beneficial drugs; and so much more. With the cited animals being presented and organized according to being found in Europe, North American, Latin America, Africa, Australasia, and Asia, and enhanced with a concluding chapter on 'The Future for Venomous Wildlife', a bibliography for further study, appendices, and an index, "Venomous Animals Of The World" is a welcome and recommended addition to school and community library Pets & Wildlife reference collections and Wildlife Studies supplemental reading lists.

Extensive research, tables, diagrams, and statistics form the foundation of this professional-level species study, intended for fellow experts in the field. "We recommend the following procedures to ensure that disturbance at dens is minimized. Do not approach a den or set up a camera until the female leaves the area. Do not use artificial lighting systems to illuminate the scene. If possible, set up cameras in the opposite direction from which the female leaves the vicinity of the den site. Set cameras and sensors at least 20 m from the den structure. Minimize the number of people involved in establishing the camera station and, to the extent possible, avoid human activity in the immediate vicinity of the den."

A Consumer's Guide to Mental Health Services
Jeffrey K. Edwards, Ed.D. and Anthony W. Heath, Ph.D.
The Haworth Press, Inc.
10 Alice Street, Binghamton, NY 13904-1580
9780789032676, $17.95 1-800-429-6784

Therapy experts Jeffrey K. Edwards, Ed.D. and Anthony W. Heath, Ph.D. combine their wisdom in A Consumer's Guide to Mental Health Services: Unveiling the Mysteries and Secrets of Psychotherapy, a book that solidly lives up to its title. Written in plain terms for readers of all backgrounds, A Consumer's Guide to Mental Health Services discusses the different models for the causes of mental health problems, the types of services available, absolute "need to know" issues about ethics, credentials, and payments, and much more. "The research for and against medication is varied, and generally written from points of view - really opinions - rather than from any straightforward, easy-to-make-sense-of facts. Two camps, those on the biological side and those on the talk-therapy side, have research showing effectiveness of their "product" as well as reasons why their point of view is most trustworthy. They also demonstrate why the other side's point of view is not... You should always discuss your medicine with your prescribing clinician, ask for potential side effects, what the medication does and how it works, how long you will be taking it, what foods you should avoid, and how alcohol or other drugs affect the medication. Medications are powerful treatments, and they can be potentially dangerous or addictive in some cases. Be informed and treat them with respect." Highly recommended, and an absolute "must-have" for any individual who may be in need of mental health services.

Princess Ai: Rumors from the Other Side
5900 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 2000, Los Angeles, CA 90036
c/o Viz Communications Inc.
295 Bay Street, San Francisco, CA 94133
9781427808226, $9.99 1-800-394-3042

Princess Ai: Rumors from the Other Side is an anthology of twelve short manga-style stories by a diversity of international authors, each offering a different take on the characters of the popular "Princess Ai" manga series about a winged girl with a virtually magical singing voice, and the young man who falls in love with her. The art styles range from wondrously beautiful to humorously comedic, and the themes tend to be romantic with a touch of bittersweet wistfulness. Recommended for readers 13 or older due to mild gore, moderately mature language and non-sexual/nondescript nudity, Princess Ai is ultimately a heart-touching complement to an emotionally moving romantic series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Angelic Days: Volume 6
Fumino Hayashi
Viz Communications Inc.
295 Bay Street, San Francisco, CA 94133
9781413903621, $9.99 1-800-394-3042

Intended for readers age thirteen to adult, the sixth and final volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion Angelic Days concludes Fumino Hayashi's alternate-universe take on the popular Japanese animated show and its characters with an array of short stories set at varying times in the characters' lives. Though the world of Angelic Days is less bleak than that of the anime, and its protagonists are less dysfunctional than their psychologically traumatized anime versions, they still have their own personal demons to confront. On-again off-again couple Misato and Kaji have to ask themselves just how they came to drift apart; Ritsuko Akagi grapples with her love for a man who can never love her in return; Hikari and Toji try to make a long-distance relationship work; and Shinji and Asuka face an uncertain future. Angelic Days eschews dramatic mecha battles or mystical confrontations for the complexities of relationships and everyday growing up, yet is all the more fitting a finale for it. Also highly recommended are Neon Genesis Evangelion Angelic Days volumes 1-5.

7563 Lake City Way, NE, Seattle, WA 98115
9781560978879, $19.95 1-800-657-1100

Krazy and Ignatz: A Ragout of Raspberries is a full-size, full-color collection of classic Krazy and Ignatz comic strips originally published in 1941-1942, including all of the Sunday strips. At its heart a love triangle (the ostensibly gender-less Krazy Kat loves Ignatz Mouse, Ignatz would throw bricks at Krazy when not tolerating Krazy's unrequited affection, and Offisa Pup loved Krazy and would throw Ignatz in jail to protect Pup's beloved). Many of the strips presented have been out of print since their original newspaper run. Brilliant, dreamlike, surreal, yet often surprisingly astute in their moments of cultural commentary, Krazy and Ignatz is enthusiastically recommended as a beautiful resurrection of America's comic strip heritage.

All the Rage: The Boondocks Past and Present

c/o The Crown Publishing Group
1745 Broadway, 17th floor, New York, NY 10019
9780307352668, $16.95 1-888-523-9292

All the Rage: The Boondocks Past and Present is more than just the latest collection of the politically charged, African-American culture-centric newspaper comic strip - it also gathers a massive assortment of interviews with comic creator, writer and cartoonist Aaron McGruder, and even prints some of the most controversial strips for the first time. Young, unsmiling radical leftist Huey gives his cynical take on everything from McDonald's ridiculous attempts to emulate hiphop culture to high-level political hypocrisy, while his gangsta-wannabe little brother Riley represents the aspect of modern rap culture that is blindly obsessed criminality: "Man, I'd never steal music off the internet... it's easier to just steal it from the store." No cow is too sacred in All the Rage; there are jabs galore for the more questionable aspects of black and white culture alike. The interviews reveal a passionate side to McGruder, embedded in his desire to do more than make his readers laugh; he also wants to make them think, and in that All the Rage is a resounding success. Highly recommended.

Revolutionary Peace through Ethnic Studies
Jose Hernandez Alvarez
Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company
4050 Westmark Dr., PO Box 1840, Dubuque, Iowa 52004-1840
9780757506956, $39.95

Revolutionary Peace through Ethnic Studies is a groundbreaking study by Jose Hernandez Alvarez (a professor in the Department of Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies at Hunter College, City University of New York for eighteen years) that seeks to isolate the unique elements that distinguish a "culture of war" - one that tends toward violence and force to resolve disputes - from a "culture of peace" - one that tends toward negotiation and cooperation to resolve disputes. Searching through the annals of history, Revolutionary Peace through Ethnic Studies reviews the positive and negative lessons to be learned from Spanish colonialism and empire-building, Latin American syncretism, Caribbean isolation, twentieth-century American history and much more. Eschewing partisan politics, such as heavy-handed tendencies to browbeat conservative vs. liberal or assimilationist vs. multicultural points of view into the reader's brain, Revolutionary Peace through Ethnic Studies instead gradually leads the reader to the big questions: How can nation-states improve domestic harmony in the present day? How can the United States best serve as a leader for world peace? A welcome and much-needed addition to modern political science shelves, especially recommended for college library collections, that deserves to be required reading for aspiring politicians - especially in America's modern era of demographical shift toward an increasingly Latino population.

One of the most successful ways we have accomplished this is through our student-led conferences. In these conferences students, rather than teachers, take the lead in showing and telling their parents what they have learned by a given point in the school year... The number one benefit we have discovered from student-led conferences is the extent to which students become accountable for their own education." Battleships are floating platforms for artillery barrages that often proved key and essential components of successful ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore military engagements. They were also to prove vulnerable to submarine and air attacks. Now the combat history and gunnery capability of these massive ships of war is fully explored in "Naval Firepower: Battleship Guns And Gunnery In The Dreadnaught Era" by naval historian and analysts Norman Friedman. The focus is on the guns that made battleships the lords of the sea in their heyday. Replete with historic black-and-white photographs of these ships, and a profusion of interior drawings depicting aspects of the guns and their munitions, "Naval Firepower" begins with notes on the units of measurement, abbreviations, and an informative introduction, followed by chapters on gunnery problems, range-keeping, shooting and hitting, tactics used in 1904 to 1914, the impact of World War I on battleship operations and developments during the years of 1914 to 1918, the era between the two wars, battleship gunnery during World War II, battles ships of the German navy, the Us navy and the US Navy at War, as well as chapters on the battleships of the Japanese, French, Italian, and Russian navies. Of special note is the appendices on "Propellants, Guns, Shells and Armour". Enhanced with extensive notes, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index, "Naval Firepower" is a model of military scholarship and a very highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Military History and Naval History reference collections.

The Vietnam War had many facets for those who served in that theatre of military combat from 1965 to 1973. One of the unique memorabilia associated with the conflict were the Zippo brand cigarette lighters that were ubiquitous among the American troops. Drawing from the collection of Bradford Edwards, Sherry Buchanan (an independent scholar, author, and expert on both Asian and Vietnamese contemporary art, history and culture) has created "Vietnam Zippos", a volume of images of Zippo brand lighters used and personalized by members of the American armed forces. Zippos lighters were visible associated with the burning of grass huts as part of search-and-destroy missions, they were used as engraved symbols of social protest, and often became a kind of talisman for American GIs during their hazardous tours of duty in that increasingly unpopular conflict. Beginning with a Timeline that begins in 1965 and ends in 1990 (when Vietnam Zippos were sold to tourists at Saigon Street Stalls), "Vietnam Zippos" is a fascinating and specialized military cultural history that is a unique and recommended contribution to the growing library of Vietnam War histories, biographies, and scholarly studies.

Offering unique insights into modern American class structure, "The American Ruling Class" is an informative, compelling, and strongly recommended examination of how an elite American oligarchy, an integrated political and economic superstructure perpetuates itself, how it recruits its initiates, how it stays in control of American governmental, educational, and commercial organizations, and how it influences the American 'body politic' to abide by the interests of the ruling class -- even when they run counter to the middle class, the working class, and the underclass. Featured are interviews with an impressive roster of notable men and women, including Robert B. Altman, James A. Baker II, Bill Bradly, Harold Brown, Hodding Carter III, William T. Coleman Jr., Walter Cronkite, Barbara Ehrenreich, Vartan Gregorian, Doug Henwood, Mike Medavoy, Joseph S. Nyre., John Perkins, Samuel Peabody, Pete Seeger, Lawrence H. Summres, Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., William Howard Taft IV, Kurt Vonnegut, and Howard Zinn. We follow two bright young men, one of whom takes the corporate road to success while the other one considers doing something more altruistic and self-fulfilling. Each is guided by Lewis Lapham as they are introduced to the 'movers and shakers', the American equivalent of 'powers behind the throne' who collectively determine the course of American political and economic policies at the highest levels of responsibility -- along with a few cultural watchdogs and commentators like folksong singer and political activist Pete Seeger. Dramatic, superbly produced and directed, thoughtful and thought provoking, "The American Ruling Class" offers a candor rarely glimpsed by ordinary citizens into who really calls the shots in America during these opening years and decades of the 21st Century.

Holy Vikings
Carl Phelpstead
Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies
Arizona State University
PO Box 872508, Tempe, AZ 85287-2508
9780866983884, $46.00

Meticulously researched and informatively presented, "Holy Vikings: Saints' Lives In The Old Icelandic Kings' Sagas" by academician and historian Carl Phelpstead (Senior Lecturer in English Literature at Cardiff University) provides an informed and articulate biographical survey and history of the royal saints recorded in the Old Icelandic kings' sagas which were felt by church scholars and prelates to be improperly secular or profane and not 'proper' recordings of the saint's lives. "Holy Vikings" makes an impressive and persuasive argument that the theoretical concepts first developed by Mikhail Bakhtin provide modern scholars and academia with fresh, perceptive, and defensible insights into the role of hagiography with respect to traditional Icelandic saga-writing, and involve varied generic conventions in order to depict the Viking aristocracy and kings as 'holy' or 'sacred' in their eras. After an informed introduction to the texts that form the basis for the discussion, specific chapters address the genre of Icelandic sagas, as well as three of the major sagas themselves. Of special note is the chapter on 'Saints' Lives and Saga Origins', followed by Professor Phelpstead's conclusions on the subject matter addressed. Enhanced with Abbreviations, a Bibliography, and an Index, "Holy Vikings" is a seminal and significant contribution to Viking Studies and Icelandic History reference collections and reading lists. Also very highly recommended from Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies for these academic library collections and translated into English by Robert E. Bjork is "A Viking Slave's Sage: Jan Fridegard's Trilogy of Novels about the Viking Age - Land of Wooden Gods, People of the Dawn, and Sacrificial Smoke" (9780866983754, $43.00).

601 North Morton Street, Bloomington, IN 47404-3797
9780253349439, $34.95 1-800-842-6796

Written by Russian and Soviet historian Alexander Rabinowitch (Professor Emeritus of History, Indiana University Bloomington), The Bolsheviks in Power: The First Year of Soviet Rule in Petrograd is an in-depth historiography of the Bolshevik Party's first year in power after the revolution of November, 1917 that so profoundly affected Soviet history and politics throughout the twentieth century. The Bolsheviks in Power denies the entrenched view that the party's severe ideology immediately changed the Soviet political system into one of brutal authoritarianism; rather, it is revealed that the Bolsheviks struggled to hold on to power amidst a sea of political, social, economic, and military crises, causing the oppressive regime that rose from it to appear virtually ad hoc. Issues discussed include the swift decline and fall of moderate Bolsheviks; the creation of the ruthless Cheka, the Bolshevik-Left SR alliance, and much more. Enthusiastically recommended as an addition to college library world history shelves.

The Papers of Joseph Henry, Volume 12: Cumulative Index is the final volume in the exhaustive "Papers of Joseph Henry" reference series, which collects the many original writings of Joseph Henry when he made a scientific name for himself in the 1800's and established the Smithsonian Institution, and survived the Civil War, all while advocating the virtues of philanthropy, history, and scientific thinking. As a cumulative index, Volume 12 consists entirely of 300+ pages of alphabetical entries, each listing in which pages of what volumes a given topic appears. An extremely handy and easy-to-use reference, Volume 12 is a must-have for libraries, universities, and private scholars who already possess volumes 1-11 of this seminal series.

BECOMING A WOMAN: A BIOGRAPHY OF CHRISTINE JORGENSEN offers a more studied examination of the state of transsexuality than most biographies offer, focusing on the sociology and science issues as much as the biographical factors involved. Thus BECOMING A WOMAN, with its scholarly approach, becomes much more the item of choice for the college-level health or sociology library than for the general-interest collection, with its chapters on psychology, social interactions, and Jorgensen's struggles within larger contexts of social definitions. An excellent guide for college-level holdings specializing in alternative social issues.

The histories of American comic book heroes and who defined them considers both the social and mythical impact and influences on these heroes, arguing that fantastic characters aren't just entertainment, but deities for modern technological society. From the occult origins of such characters to the attraction magic and the occult has held over all, this analysis earns a place not only on the shelves of New Age libraries, but for any collection strong in social issues, myths, and the needs of modern society.
