Dover Publications Inc.
31 E. 2nd St., Mineola, NY 11501
www.doverpublications.com

Dover Publishers works hard at returning classic arts titles to print in affordable paperback format: these new arrivals are some of the recent recommended picks from their latest holdings. Charles Oliver's Anatomy And Perspective (0486435407, $8.95) republishes a 1972 slim beginners title covering two fundamentals of figure drawing from classical Greece and the Renaissance. Students learn how to convey the structure and functions of the human figure following the elementary teachings in Anatomy And Perspective. R.L. Leonard and C.A. Glassgold's American Art Deco (0486433749, $19.95) returns a 1931 classic to print, providing over 200 black and white illustrations in a review of the Art Deco style's history and foundations. Dore's London (0486432-726, $12.95) isn't a reprint: it's an original publication gathering all 180 illustrations from Dore's classic London, A Pilgrimage. The gathering in London presents all 180 drawings from his 1872 classic. Students of costume history and costume design will welcome Caspar Luyken's return in Gallery Of Late-Seventeenth-Century Costume (0486429865, $12.95), republishing plates from an original German 1703 classic. Luyken collaborated on several books with German art dealer/publisher Christoph Weigel, and this reprints plates from one of his works.

Her focus on Madagascar's people, animals, and society brings to life the rugged individuals and colorful personalities and issues of the island, making Lords & Lemurs a testimony to Madagascar's past and future in the modern world.

Her national recognition as a cutting horse non-pro champion and her rodeo insights from the inside contribute to Rodeo: Behind The Scenes At America's Most Exciting Sport. Simply outstanding.

Camino Books
PO Box 59026, Philadelphia, PA 19102
0940159880 $24.95 caminobooks.com

Written by defense attorney William C. Costopoulos with the assistances of award-winning political journalist Brad Bumsted, Murder Is The Charge: The True Story Of Mayor Charlie Robertson And The York, Pennsylvania, Race Riots is the true story of the aftermath of the deadly July 1969 race riots in York, Pennsylvania. Two people were murdered, a white police officer and a young black woman, but in the interests of preserving a delicate peace, the district attorney chose not to prosecute a case for the killings. Over thirty years later, New York Mayor Charlie Robertson, a former police officer, was arrested for alleged involvement murder, with the prosecution's chief witness claiming that he handed out ammunition to white gang members and instigated them to kill. Tainted testimony, conflicting ballistics evidence, and a trial steeped in emotion resulted, and cost Charlie Robertson any chance of a successive mayoral term. Murder Is The Charge lays out the true story of the trial and its resolution, and the "closure" it allegedly brought to the riots, though with some bias for the defendants' points of view. A compelling account of an attempt to serve justice; it is up to the reader to decide how successful that attempt was.

Al Ries and Laura Ries's Fall Of Advertising And The Rise Of PR (0060081996, $14.95) has already achieved acclaim as a national bestseller on marketing and branding, and its appearance in paperwork should not be missed. Marketing experts are insisting the power of advertising to build new brands has become too massive and its impact is waning, and marketing strategist Al Reis along with partner/daughter Laura Ries use their background consulting Fortune 500 companies to explore alternative concepts. They also emphasize this and continue the focus and discussion in their newest Origin Of Brands (0060570148, $24.95), furthering the survey to reveal and discuss the 'natural laws' of product innovation and change. Here Darwin's idea of evolution is neatly applied to the branding process, revealing a new strategy for creating and promoting innovative products. Lewis Pinault's The Play Zone (0066621011, $25.95) tells how to unlock creative genuis as well as connect with the consumers who will appreciate it. This time he analyzes the latest findings on consumer experiences and the relationship between play and innovative new technologies. John Kay's Culture And Prosperity (0060587059, $25.95) tells the truth about markets and why some nations are rich, but most poor. One of Britain's leading economists and a London Business School and Oxford University former professor, John Kay provides a surprisingly witty examination of the latest economic thinking which lends to rich or poor nations and differing strategies and insights on capitalist models. His attack on oversimplified market analysis makes for a thoughtful analysis appropriate for college-level economics classes. Chris Farrell's Deflation: What Happens When Pries Fall (0060576456, $22.95) raises the warning light about one of the most feared ideas in modern economics. Deflation conjures visions of no jobs and economic slumps, but author Farrell explains here that deflation need not lead to economic collapse. Backed by a strong business background as contributing economics editor at BusinessWeek, Farrell offers a new way of examining modern economics and markets.

One of the most famous of Colorado's 19th Century boomtowns was Leadville where placer gold was first discovered in 1860, and then rediscovered in 1868 with the first underground gold veins. In 1876 the area was fairly deserted when the local black sand was found to actually be a rich silver/lead ore combination and the boom was back on. By 1879 more than 10,000 people were in the area, and so were 120 saloons and 118 gambling houses to serve them. This was a time that Leadville was host to the likes of Doc Holliday, Tom Horn, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and other famous (and infamous) visitors. The 1893 "Silver Panic" ended Leadville's most notorious days, but the town was keep alive for decades with more stable development, including the massive Climax Molybdenum Mine. Christian Buys' A Quick History Of Leadville is a brief (104-pages) but superbly written and nicely illustrated (92 photographs) specialized regional history that could well serve as a model of how it could and should be done for other colorful communities in the west.

The Parthenon Code

Solving Light Books
727 Mount Alban Drive, Annapolis, MD 21401
0970543832 $29.95 SolvingLight.com

In The Parthenon Code: Mankind's History In Marble, author Robert Bowie Johnson Jr. draws upon his own unique approach to combine elements of mythology, religion, spirituality, art, antiquarian classics, and world history to craft one of the most original, engaging, thoughtful and thought-provoking works advocating a kind of "alternative history" explanation for a post-Biblical Deluge association of Greek pagan themes and symbolism with the Hebrew biblical account of Noah's flood and its aftermath. The revelation that the Greeks knew Noah as Nereus and referred to him as the "Wet One" and built the Parthenon to celebrate a "victory" over Noah and his God, and in honor of the serpent-worshiping Eve of Genesis, makes The Parthenon Code an iconoclastic, mind-stimulating, and strongly recommended read for students of religion and Hellenic history!

Around Cape Horn: A Maritime Artist-Historian's Account Of His 1892 Voyage is based on that journal, but also goes on to describe the transition of seafaring from sailing ships to steamships, within the context of America shippers last attempts to keep deepwater sailing ships commercially viable. Twenty-five of Davis illustrations are included, as well as period photographs and an appendix listing locations where many of Davis' acclaimed ship models can be found. The high-quality publications and classic presentations of Library of America makes certain classics will be presented in volumes appropriate for lasting library lending, and two recent additions are no less powerful for literary holdings. The new translation by Arthur Goldhammer of Tocqueville's Democracy In America (1931-082545, $35.00) returns the most influential book about early American politics and democracy to modern library holdins. Tocqueville came to this country in 1831 to study American prison systems and interviewed over 200 people on American politics, law, and issues. His return to France and subsequent description of this country's systems vividly described current conditions and their implications for European society and remains a classic today. Washington Irving's three Western narratives Tour On The Prairies, Astoria and Adventures Of Captain Bonneville (1931082537, $40.00) presents a trilogy which helped define early perceptions of Western life in the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, and Pacific Northwest. Editor James Rhonda does a fine job of pulling together these narratives and their appearance under one cover results in a satisfyingly uniform presentation libraries will appreciate.

Ivan R. Dee's excellent discussions are recommended picks for high school to university library holdings, making good supplemental references for students. Among the best of recent publications: a new adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1566635535, $7.95) is provided by Dorothy Louise: while it remains faithful to her intentions, Frankenstein's new look tailors a play for performance and provides a strong plot suitable for contemporary drama. Similarly does Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters (1566635543, $7.95), with Curt Columbus providing the new translation and Nicholas Rudall and Bernard Sahlins working their editing magic on both productions. Don't miss Trevor Griffiths' Ivan R. Dee Guide To Plays And Playwrights (1566635667, $28.95): over 500 A-Z entries provide details on the most important plays and playwrights from ancient to modern times, providing an important reference for playwrights and modern theatre goers alike. John Tytell's Ezra Pound: The Solitary Volcano (1566635-594, $18.95) will appeal to any literary collection strong in modern poets: unlike other biographic portraits, Tytell's Ezra Pound interprets how Pound's psychology translated to his controversial poems, providing a balanced analysis of his mind and achievements in light of his mental state. Robert Thomas Fallon's A Theatergoer's Guide To Shakespeare's Characters (15-66635705, $27.50) provides fans and students of the Bard with a companion guide to the people of his plays. Organized A-Z by character name, Theatergoer's Guide To Shakespeare's Characters provides in-depth chapters on each key protagonist; not the short biographical sketches one might anticipate. Included within the body of each character sketch are plenty of quotes from the play, analysis of the character's interactions and importance in the play, and an overview of plot.

Four new arrivals promise different, exciting plots and strong characterization for fans of mysteries. Michael Bowen's Unforced Error (1590581091, $24.95) deftly blends Civil War re-enactors with a host of unusual participants such as librarians and publishers: the last to be involved in a murder to create a multi-faceted story of a complex series of legal issues. Then there is Michael Pearce's Death Of An Effendi (1590580664, $24.95), for example: set in Cairo in 1909, the murder capitol of the world, the mysterious death of an Egyptian elite involves investigator Gareth Owen in a dangerous job involving secret police and vanishings. As well as Mark de Castrique's Grave Undertaking (1590581-164, $24.95): here a former police officer's refuge and new job as an undertaker in the quiet Appalachian mountains is destroyed when he finds himself with too much business. Finally, William Tapply's Elements Of Mystery Fiction (1590581-156, $16.95) departs from the usual fiction bent of Poisoned Pen Press to address the basics of how to write the 'modern whodunit': here published veterans of the field cover the basics. Pascual Duarte grew up in brutal and brutalizing poverty, hatred, depravity, and despair. From his prison cell where he is awaiting execution for a series of murders he has committed, Duarte writes down his confessions and in doing so, depicts the horrors of his life, foremost among which are a despicable mother, an unfaithful wife, and a lifetime of savage crimes. Duarte's account (written with a hauntingly childlike sense of the world) portrays a man twisted by the cruel hand of fate into a source of contributing evil. Strongly recommended reading, The Family Of Pascual Duarte is a unique and flawlessly written novel by the late Camilo Jose Cela (1916-2002) and will admirably serve to introduce a new generation to the work of this deftly talented author of more than fifty books during his lifetime.

When Hazard Lepage sets out to breed his rare blue stallion Poseidon in the hope of saving his horse's bloodline from extinction, he creates a trail of anarchy, confusion, and chaos -- as well as encountering the charms of a few good women. The narrator of Hazard's idiosyncratic adventures in pursuit of his obsession is a maniacal, naked writer who works in his bathtub. Always original, at times wickedly funny, and told with unrestrained enthusiasm framed by a post-war, rough-edged Alberta, The Studhorse Man showcases and documents Robert Kroetsch as one of Canada's best living writers at work today. Also part of the University of Alberta Press "Canadian Literature Series" and very highly recommended reading are Robert Kroetsch's earlier works: What The Crow Said (0888643039, $14.95); The Words Of My Roaring (0888643490, $16.95); Completed Field Notes (088864-3500, $19.95: and The Hornbooks Of Rita K. The collaboration of Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall, Spiritual Capital: Wealth We Can Live By offers a highly critical view of the business and ethical practices of capitalism as it is practiced today, with its amorality vested in short-term self-interest, reaping profits, obsession with shareholder value, isolationist thinking, and reckless disregard of long-term consquences. Arguing for the need for a radical new philosophy for corporate governance that adjusts the meaning and purpose of wealth creation, and using the principles of "spiritual capital" and "spiritual intelligence" to define the needs of humanity and human government, Spiritual Capital is a passionately presented charge for people to make a difference

Waldman (Assistant Professor of Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art, University of Texas - Austin) is a collection of source information concerning Florentine sculptor Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560). Accused by his enemies of beign foul-mouthed, greedy, and sycophantic, to the extent that he inspired the two-dimensional character Fieramosca in Berlioz's 1838 opera "Benvenuto Cellini", Baccio Bandinelli affected art history in more ways than the his detractors would have one believe - his originality was remarkable enough to become part of the image of dynastic legitimacy for his Medici patrons, and his works perpetuated his influence long after his name became memory. Baccio Bandinelli And Art At The Medici Court presents its wealth of documents, many from the private archive of the Bandinelli family, entirely in their original Italian with some English annotations; however, the many documents themselves are not translated. An excellent primary art history source source for those familiar with Italian.

Running Through Fire
Zosia Goldberg
Mercury House
PO Box 192850, San Francisco, CA 94119-2850
1562791281 $15.95 mercuryhouse.org

The latest addition to the Mercury House "NEA Heritage & Preservation" series, Running Through Fire: How I Survived The Holocaust by Zosia Goldberg is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to the growing library of Holocaust literature, memoirs, and biographies. Zosia Goldberg was a Polish Jew living within the warsaw Ghetto when she was rejected by a fellow Jew who cursed her in Yiddish and spat upon her to die among the "goyim" (non-jews). Taken that incident as a sign from God, Zosia escaped from the Ghetto and posed as a Gentile in order to survive the Nazi Holocaust that led to the almost complete extermination of the Warsaw Ghetto Jewish community. Running Through Fire is a gripping story of narrow escapes, help from unlikely sources, bitter betrayals by fellow Jews, and a dramatic struggle against human folly on the one hand and human depravity on the other. After surviving World War II and the Holocaust, Zosia came to America, married, and then moved to Caracas, Venezuela and worked in the garment business. Returning to America after her husband's death, she now lives in Florida where she was materially assisted by poet, novelist and critic in recording her life experiences for the benefit of future generations.

Now in its second edition, One Family Before And During The Holocaust is an account of the personal lives of members of a Jewish family. Written by the son of a Holocaust survivor, One Family Before And During The Holocaust draws upon personal testimony, archival sources, photographs, and official documents to draw a vivid picture of how encroaching restrictions curtailed the family further and further until they were forced to attempt to run or hide, in effort to forstall deportation and execution. A profound and moving testimony, and a welcome contribution to Holocaust literature, the message of One Family Before And During The Holocaust is superbly summarized in its final words: "At least for those who survived, it can be said, their lives were not cut short by murderous hate. For those relatives whose lives were cut short I can only wonder what they could have accomplished if they had lived a full life."
