Peter Bowden
Tilde University Press
c/o International Publishers Marketing

Dulles, VA 20166
9780734611499, $59.95,

Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, is a branch of philosophy that involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct. Applied Ethics is the philosophical examination, from a moral standpoint, of particular issues in private and public life that are matters of moral judgment. It is thus the attempts to use philosophical methods to identify the morally correct course of action in various fields of human life. Bioethics, for example, is concerned with identifying the correct approach to matters such as euthanasia, or the allocation of scarce health resources, or the use of human embryos in research. Environmental ethics is concerned with questions such as the duties or duty of 'whistleblowers' to the general public as opposed to their loyalty to their employers. Knowledgeably compiled and deftly edited by Peter Bowden (Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of Sydney), "Applied Ethics: Strengthening Ethical Practices" is a 262-page compendium comprised of twenty-one informed and informative articles (chapters) covering a wide range of practical ethical issues cogently organized into two major sections: 'The ethical framework' and 'Ethics in the disciplines'. Superbly presented, "Applied Ethics: Strengthening Ethical Practices" is especially recommended for academic course curriculums in Ethics, as well as a core addition to community and academic library Philosophy & Ethics reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

The White House
Patrick Phillips-Schrock
McFarland & Company
PO Box 611, Jefferson NC 28640
9780786471522, $75.00,

The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. The house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban, and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia Creek sandstone in the Neoclassical style. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Construction continued with the addition of the South Portico in 1824 and the North in 1829. Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. Eight years later, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office which was eventually moved as the section was expanded. The third-floor attic was converted to living quarters in 1927 by augmenting the existing hip roof with long shed dormers. A newly constructed East Wing was used as a reception area for social events; Jefferson's colonnades connected the new wings. East Wing alterations were completed in 1946, creating additional office space. By 1948, the house's load-bearing exterior walls and internal wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame constructed inside the walls. Once this work was completed, the interior rooms were rebuilt. Today, the White House Complex includes the Executive Residence, West Wing, East Wing, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building - the former State Department, which now houses offices for the President's staff and the Vice President - and Blair House, a guest residence. Very highly recommended for personal, community, and academic library Architectural Studies reference collections, "The White House: An Illustrated Architectural History" by Patrick Phillips-Schrock is a profusely illustrated 224 page compendium the architectural evolution and interior design features beginning with the first presidential home in New York City and Philadelphia (1789-1800) and then the White House in Washington D.C. from its creation and down to the present day.

At War With the Empire: Ireland's Fight for Independence, is a full-color, historically accurate, politically objective graphic novel about the fierce and deadly guerilla war that Ireland fought from 1919 to 1921 against the British Army. Though not unduly graphic or gruesome, At War With the Empire does not shirk from chronicling the atrocities committed by both sides. Battle tactics, major conflicts, arrests, executions, the replacement of the police force with "tans" (World War I veterans) who regularly engaged in retaliatory riots against civilians, and more fill this harrowing true story. At War With the Empire closes with the signing of a treaty between Britain and Ireland, as well as a brief postscript on how the Old IRA split into pro-treaty and anti-treaty forces, marking the inception of the Irish Civil War. The realistic art style of At War With the Empire brings history to shocking life, and Ireland's hard-learned lessons about the savagery of war and sectarian violence are as relevant as ever in today's chaotic world, where too many other nations are beset by similar suffering. At War With the Empire makes history thoroughly accessible to readers of all ages, and is highly recommended especially for high school and public library graphic novel collections.

Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong is an adventurous black-and-white graphic novel about coming of age, the fallout of a painful divorce, a high school popularity contest (a.k.a. "student council election"), and robots designed to battle one another to the robo-death. Charlie is a laid-back guy; as captain of the basketball team, he might technically be a "jock", but Nate, the eccentric leader of the robotics club, is his unlikely best friend. When the high school students' discretionary fund comes up for grabs between the robotics club (who need it to build a championship robot) and the cheerleaders (who need new uniforms), it sparks a bitter war for a vacant student council seat - and Charlie is caught in the middle! Worse yet, Charlie's estranged mother, whom he has barely seen in the past few years, plans to come and visit for Thanksgiving - along with her boyfriend! It's enough to make a teenager and his friends (and not-so-friends) run away in a minivan to compete in a robo-rumble - this can only end well, right? Funny, touching, and firmly grounded in the foibles of star-crossed friendship, Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong is enthusiastically recommended for public library collections and readers of all ages.

New York, NY 10010
9781596438651 $19.99

Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas is a full-color graphic novel profiling three female scientists whose work in the field would completely revolutionize humanity's understanding of other primates. Jane Goodall was the first the discover that chimpanzees used tools, a behavior once thought to be a defining trait of humans; Dian Fossey publicized the threat that human poaching and habitat incursions posed to gorillas (notably speaking out against supposed eco-tourism, which she denounced as causing more harm than good), and Birute Galdikas observed orangutans in Indonesia, in the process becoming a strong voice for rainforest conservation. All three women were recruited by the brilliant (if somewhat eccentric) anthropologist Louis Leakey, who keenly spotted their passion for science and interest in primates despite their lack of anthropology credentials. Although Primates occasionally engages in artistic license/fictionalization with regard to minor details for the sake of narrative flow, the main story is directly from the documented contributions these three women made to both science and ecological conservation. Highly recommended for readers of all ages!

Unsportsmanlike Conduct: A Pearls Before Swine Collection is the latest collection of Stephan Pastis' popular comic strip, which has appeared in more than 600 newspapers worldwide and been named Best Comic Strip of the Year twice by the National Cartoonists Society. The cartoon cast includes a gaggle of anthropomorphic animals including an eternally hunted zebra, insensitive predatory crocodiles, an obtuse pig, a self-centered rat, and a goat who may be isolated by his relative sanity, as well as occasional "creator cameos". Unsportsmanlike Conduct is a hybrid mash-up of shaggy-dog puns, wild(ish) antics, pointless violence up to the level of incompetent animal suicide bombers, and the occasional hint of audience-trolling (the creator even tells the tongue-in-cheek story of an inflammatory "Family Circus" parody he allegedly created to maintain his status as an "edgy cartoonist"). "'Why is it that at a time when most people are hurting economically, there's this class of super-rich people who are doing better than ever? ...We should do something about it.' 'Like write your congressman?' 'Like push them into a lake.' 'Try your congressman.' 'Fine. We'll push him in too.'"

Out of a wealth of military aircraft contracts a surprising number of them were cancelled -- even after the prototypes of these planes proved successful (e.g. Northrop YB-49; Flying Wing; Canadian CF-105 Arrow; Mach 3 Lockheed YF-12), while others never made it pass their initial mock-up phase. For the first time, all of these failed military aircrafts have been compiled together by photographer Erik Simonsen in "Project Terminated", a superbly illustrated, 160 page compendium showcasing ten canceled air craft complete with their details and what led to cancellations. Informed, informative, and enhanced with a glossary and a comprehensive index, "Project Terminated" is an unique and highly recommended addition to personal, community, and academic library Aviation History and Military History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

James Miller's ALBATROS D.I-D.II (9781780965994, $18.95) tells of the 1916 development and design of the Albatros as German fighter pilots sought to create an aircraft that would complete against more successful Allied forces. Two Albatros craft were developed simultaneously, and allowed Germany to regain control of the skies by fall of 1916. This history of the two provides a powerful assessment of how the designs changed German aerial combat abilities in a pick for any World War I collection. Peter E. Davies' US MARINE CORPS F-4 PHANTOM II UNITS OF THE VIETNAM WAR (9781849087513, $22.95) provides a survey of the missions and achievements of the F-4 Phantom II units of Vietnam, and is a pick for any military collection strong in aviation history or Vietnam War units in particular. This coverage considers the F-4's performance in missions and uses the experience of aircrew who flew them to add to the comprehensive history of the craft. Pages packed with color and black and white photos enhance documentation of major battles and interactions between officers and pilots. The result is a vivid recreation of the F-4's achievements, perfect for any military aviation or Vietnam War history collection! Bill Yenne's THE WHITE ROSE OF STALINGRAD: THE REAL-LIFE ADVENTURE OF LIDIYA VLADIMIROVNA LITVYAK, THE HIGHEST SCORING FEMALE AIR ACE OF ALL TIME (9781849088107, $27.95) offers the true story of "Lilya" Litvyak, who became the highest scoring woman air ace of all time. Despite her achievements, very little has been written about her: perhaps because of her evolution as a unique Soviet fighter pilot during World War II. This account not only covers Litvyak's life and achievement, but offers many further insights into Soviet operations during the war, making it of interest to collections ranging from aviation and military to women's history and Soviet history holdings.

Raising Cubby
John Elder Robison
Random House Audio Books
c/o The Random House Publishing Group
1745 Broadway, 5th floor
New York, NY 10019
9780307881359 $40.00

Read by the author, Raising Cubby: A Father and Son's Adventures with Asperger's, Trains, Tractors, and High Explosives is an unabridged audiobook rendition of the true-life memoir of a high-functioning autistic father and his efforts to raise his son. John Elder Robison didn't know that he had Asperger's syndrome until he was diagnosed at age forty, but for all his life he found machines easier to figure out than people. Unable to read and understand the subtleties of human interaction as easily as the average person, he was all but oblivious to the signs that his marriage was in trouble until it ended. And then he had a son Cubby to raise on his own... by reading him electrical manuals at bedtime, and making sure he didn't drink any diesel fuel. But Robison was slow to see the signs of Asperger's in his own child. Cubby became a talented chemist at age seventeen - a little too talented. Smart enough to make military explosives, and unwise enough to make YouTube videos that drew the attention of the federal government. The agents assigned to evaluate Cubby deemed him harmless, but a blood-hungry prosecutor equated Cubby with a terrorist, charging him with multiple felonies. As Cubby faced the possibility of up to sixty years in prison, both father and son had to re-evaluate their lives, what being "on the spectrum" means, and how best to adapt to a complicated world. Engrossing from beginning to end, Raising Cubby is highly recommended. 10 CDs, 12 1/2 hours.

Instead/I aimed a pistol at the dogs/and it was the pistol in my hand that was so cold,/which is why she left,/which is how I came awake.

Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England, United Kingdom along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. It was founded as a borough in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. It is the fourth most populous British city, and third most populous in England, with a 2011 population of 466,400 and is at the center of a wider urban area, the Liverpool City Region, which has a population of around 2 million people. Historically a part of Lancashire, the urbanization and expansion of Liverpool were both largely brought about by the city's status as a major port. By the 18th century, trade from the West Indies, Ireland and mainland Europe coupled with close links with the Atlantic Slave Trade furthered the economic expansion of Liverpool. By the early 19th century, 40% of the world's trade passed through Liverpool's docks, contributing to Liverpool's rise as a major city. Liverpool is also well known for its inventions and innovations, particularly in terms of infrastructure, transportation and general construction. Railways, ferries and the skyscraper were all pioneered in the city. Now in a newly updated and expanded third edition, "Liverpool: A People's History" by Peter Aughton is a 352 page, profusely illustrated compendium detailing the history of this iconic British city. Informed, informative, and highly recommended, "Liverpool: A People's History" is enhanced with the inclusion of a comprehensive list of Liverpool street names, copious notes and references, a list for further reading, and an index.

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (April 6 or March 28, 1483 - April 6, 1520), known to the art world as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. Collaboratively compiled and deftly edited by the team of Italian Renaissance art expert Tom Henry and Paul Joannides (Professor in the History of Hart at the University of Cambridge), "Late Raphael" is a 384 page coffee table art book compendium showcasing almost ninety of Raphael's works -- which are all the more impressive when realizing that this Renaissance artist died at the early age of 37. Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning). In modern times, typography has been put into motion - in film, television and online broadcasts - to add emotion to mass communication. Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, graffiti artists, clerical workers, and anyone else who arranges type for a product. Until the Digital Age, typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users. "Bright! Typography Between Illustration & Art" is a 420 page, bilingual (German & English), profusely illustrated compendium showcasing the immense variety and creativity of contemporary typography. Of special note are the interviews with seven outstanding typographer/artists: Ed Fella, Tracey Emin, Tobias Rehberger, Marc Titchner, Marc Jijl, Alex Hanimann, and Lawrence Weiner. An impressive and seminal collection, "Bright! American Indians in British Art 1700-1840
Stephanie Pratt
University of Oklahoma Press
2800 Venture Drive
Norman, OK 73069
9780806142005 $21.95

"American Indians in British Art, 1700-1840" is a fascinating examination of British artists' representation of American Indians as seen in many paintings, engravings, sculptures, ceramics, and other art forms during the 18th century and beyond. Author Stephanie Pratt, a tribal member of the Crow Creek Dakota Sioux, is also an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Plymouth, Devon, United Kingdom. Through thorough examination of a parade of historical British art works, some rarely displayed, she traces the evolution from an image of abstraction to more representational art in the portrayal of Indian subjects. Placing art works in historical context, she concludes that artistic traditions shown in images of the era conveyed complexity and a movement from a passive, allegorical entity towards a more vivid living participant in an unfolding historical series of cultural clashes. More than 30 black and white art reproductions are included, as well as 13 color plates of historic paintings with representations of Indian figures, portraits, or images. Quite a significant number of these may be unfamiliar to American audiences, being kept in various British art collections. Author Pratt divides the images' progression into five chapter areas: The Allegorical Representation of America, Warfare, Diplomacy, and Visual Representation (ca. 1700-1760), History Painting and American Indians: Benjamin West and Others (1760-1804), Secret Diplomacy and Uneasy Alliances: the British and American Indian Relationships in the Revolutionary and Post-Revolutionary War Periods (1774-1815), and Travel, Observation, and the Pathos of Decline. Her conclusion is both complicated and compelling. In part she states: "American Indians were translated into terms conformable to European values because the alternative, representing them in terms conformable to Indian values, was literally unthinkable." She also speaks of "the impossibility of fitting one people to another's precepts (p. 152)." Despite this, and despite a possibly inaccurate representation of the Indian images, she posits that "We should examine them as providing evidence of their own situation, attempting to make sense of American Indian culture at a particularly volatile moment in colonial history (p. 152-153)." Thus the value of examination of these European artistic representations of American Indians may mirror in part both the limits of European cultural imagination but also the real evidence of an immediate need to deal with a defining cultural encounter. Kudos to the author for a measured, detailed, scholarly analysis of these unusual works of art representing American Indians at a time of great, stressful change.

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. While a precise definition varies among genocide scholars, a legal definition is found in the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG). Article 2 of this convention defines genocide as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group." Genocide in one form or another has been practiced throughout recorded human history. Its single largest practice took place under the Nazis, but continues to this present day under the new term of 'ethnic cleansing' in countries as disparate as Serbia, the Sudan, and Iraq. Collaborative compiled and edited by academicians Samuel Totten (University of Arkansas, Fayetteville) and Steven Leonard Jacobs (University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa), "Pioneers of Genocide Studies" is a 634 page compendium comprised of twenty-five papers by dedicated scholars and organized into seven categories of contributors: Historians, Political Scientists, Sociologists, Lawyers and Jurists, Psychologists, Independent Scholars. Of special note is the article 'From Holocaust to Genocide: The Journey Continues' by theologian and co-editor Steven Leonard Jacobs. Enhanced with a select bibliography, contributor credentials, and a comprehensive index, "Pioneers Of Genocide Studies" is a seminal work and very strongly recommended for academic library Holocaust Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Other People's Money

c/o Penguin Group USA
375 Hudson Street, 3rd floor
New York, NY 10014-3657
9780525952657 $28.95

Other People's Money: Inside the Housing Crisis and the Demise of the Greatest Real Estate Deal Ever Made is an in-depth scrutiny of the history of a Manhattan real estate property, Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village, a complex of 110 buildings and 11,232 apartments across 80 contiguous acres. Though the story of Stuyvesant stretches back to the 1920's, the focus of Other People's Money is set amid the economic repercussions of the 21st century, especially the housing bubble that burst in 2008 and caused the Great Recession. Today, Stuyvesant Town is well-known as arguably the greatest real estate failure in history, given that it sold to real estate giant Tishman Speyer and its partner BlackRock for $5.4 billion in 2006, and they unambiguously defaulted in 2010. Even amid the heat of the housing bubble, Stuyvesant was primarily the residence of working-class and middle-class families - people who put down community roots, and depended on rent controls to make living there affordable. Laws were tweaked, enabling property owners to raise rents on vacated apartments; the ultimate $5.4 billion deal could only have turned a profit by replacing most of the working-class and middle-class tenants with upscale, wealthier tenants who would pay substantially higher rent. The collapse of the housing bubble precipitated financial disaster; Tishman Speyer and BlackRock lost millions of investors' dollars, though they escaped ruin themselves. Other People's Money is an absolutely fascinating microcosm of the real estate market gone horribly wrong, with an eye toward the larger picture - and a siren warning that the real estate industry still hasn't learned from the catastrophic lessons of the past. Highly recommended.

The Sustainable Fashion Handbook
Sandy Black, author
Thames & Hudson
500 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10110
9780500290569 $55.00

"The Sustainable Fashion Handbook" is a handy illustrated guidebook for innovative members of the global fashion industry who support the implementation of (all aspects of) sustainable fashion. Such designer names as Stella McCartney, Dries Van Noten (Antwerp), Tim Jackson (London), David Mason of Nutters of Savile Row, Hussein Chalayan, Issey Miyake, Zowie Broach and Brian Kirkby for Boudicca, and Desiree Heiss and Ines Kaag of Bless are featured design entities. Color photographs and mixed media presentations are strongly featured throughout this fascinating textile and fashion creation bible, based on a comprehensive sustainability model. There is substantial discussion of transparency in the supply chain and ethical issues in sustainable fashion, along with fashion design processes revisited and clothing waste and recycling. Sustainable fashion is a far reaching, all inclusive green topic, and part of the thrust of all designers committed to it is reinventing a new "cool" fashion model based on global production ethics and assimilation. some fascinating related topics covered include fashion and technology, virtual fashion, and future textiles and fashion. As an example of an innovative fashion entity, Everything Must Go, an exhibition of recycled saris and discarded clothing from India is featured, as shown in London in 2012 (p. 266-7). More provocative dialogue and discussion is presented in an interview with Garth Ward, owner of recycling consultancy Aestiva Ltd.: "Today designers may also consider sustainability, but I'm not sure that this word is completely understood.... Sustainability really involves a series of trade-offs, but of what against what? ...They (designers) need to completely re-examine how they design and fabricate clothing by considering the first, second and even tertiary uses (p. 270)." Finally the interplay of various components of sustainable fashion design is commented upon by Hussein Chalayan, whose work is repeatedly represented in "The Sustainable Fashion Handbook:" ...people cannot see how our realities are connected...we need to be re-educated to understand these connections and...we would be able to rebuild what we have around us (p. 78)." Thus "The Sustainable Fashion Handbook" presents a carousel of multiple views reflecting components of sustainable fashion design, both as ethically influenced process and product. In a world and global community increasingly made aware of the need for sustainability, ethics, and creativity, "The Sustainable Fashion Handbook" presents skimmings of a wide variety of current thoughts and practices.
