Two excellent biography/history coverages provide delightful accounts that read with all the drama of fiction and all the facts of nonfiction. Thomas Goodhue's Curious Bones: Mary Anning (1883846935) tells of Mary's early involvement in the birth of paleontology. Her realization that fossils hold clues to extinct species came despite formal education, and led to pioneering field work which opened up the field.
