Henry soon meets an outlaw alligator trapper and stows away on the trapper's boat. This begins Henry's journey away from the city and its problems into the heart of the Everglades where he soon comes to realize that some of the people who have made their lives in the watery landscape of these swamps and marshlands are in conflict with others (including a roving biologist and a girl who lives on a yacht) who feel the Everglades is a national environmental treasure. Caught between these two opposing views, it all comes down to a final race to save a life and come to a clear understanding of it all.
