As I turned each page, I cheered for Jack. His grief is raw, his emotions are genuine, and his struggles mirror what many young readers experience when life suddenly changes. Rather than offering simple solutions, Bird reminds us that healing comes through patience, encouragement, and the people willing to believe in us when we struggle to believe in ourselves.
Theo quickly became one of my favorite characters. Theo's kindness never seems forced or unrealistic. Instead, he offers Jack exactly what every child deserves - a friend who sees potential instead of problems. Their friendship becomes the heart of the novel and beautifully shows how one caring person can change another person's future.
The family relationships are equally compelling. Jack's father is grieving while trying to hold life together, making their relationship both tender and realistic. Their shared love of food and cooking becomes a bridge back to one another, illustrating how everyday moments often become our greatest source of healing.
One of the most delightful surprises was the role baking plays throughout the story. The kitchen becomes more than a place to prepare food - it becomes a place where they honor memories, rebuild confidence, and quietly regain hope.
