Wonderfully written by Rochel Groner Vorst, The Sukkah That I Built is a warmly illustrated color children's picturebook featuring the artwork of Elizabeth Victor-Elsby and is the picturebook story about building a temporary eating place during the Festival of Ingathering (a traditional Jewish celebration) called a "Sukkah". The simple prose mimics the repetitive style of the famous nursery rhyme "This is the house that Jack built", only it is about the fun of constructing a Sukkah from boards and nails. A postscript on the last page informs readers of all ages about the celebration that a Sukkah is part of. A fine and enjoyable picturebook celebration of a part of Jewish culture and tradition, The Sukkah That I Built is highly recommended and enjoyable reading for children ages 2 through 5.

Grandma is alone and Austin feels his summer has lost its special magic it's up to them both to make new traditions in this warm story of death and change, with black and white drawings by Thomas Allen. George's Marvelous Medicine (0375822062, $15.95) tells of a miserable old grandmother who is constantly nagging poor George. He plans a special medicine for her which will give her a taste of her own sour grapes in this hilarious story. Both classic tales enjoy new editions and will appeal to advanced elementary level readers.

Libraries looking to spice up their multicultural sections will relish these two new picturebook tales. The artist poses an unusual contest as the solution for the problem. Warlord's Beads tells of a man fortunate to live under the roof of a powerful Chinese warlord but only as long as his worried father, an accountant, finds good favor with the warlord. It's up to the young man to rescue a father in trouble with a clever solution in this problem-solving story of intrigue and faith. Both are fine tales with surprise endings.
